Liverpool v Manchester United - Matchday Key Facts & Stats

Liverpool v Manchester United: Tactical Analysis and Key Stats

As Liverpool gear up to host Manchester United at Anfield today, excitement is palpable for the first big clash of 2025. With both teams having rich histories and fierce rivalries, this fixture is more than just a game; it’s a showdown of tactics, passion, and history.

Impressive Unbeaten Streaks and Scoring Records

Liverpool have been in formidable form against Manchester United in recent years, losing only once in their last 13 Premier League encounters. This statistic not only highlights Liverpool’s dominance but also sets the stage for an intriguing battle. The Reds have been particularly prolific, scoring three or more goals in each of their last three Premier League matches—a feat not achieved since their six-game streak in early 2014.

“Following their 3-0 win at Old Trafford in the reverse fixture, Arne Slot could become just the second Liverpool boss to do the league double over United in his first season with the club, after George Kay in 1936-37.” This potential achievement for Slot would write a new chapter in Liverpool’s storied history and further endear him to the Anfield faithful.

Salah’s Record-Breaking Season

Mohamed Salah continues to be a central figure in this rivalry, having scored more goals and provided more assists against United than any other player in Premier League history. His involvement is 30 goals this season (17 goals and 13 assists) not only underscores his critical role in Liverpool’s attack but also places him at the pinnacle of Premier League history, tying with Alan Shearer for the most 30+ goal involvements in multiple campaigns.

Anfield as a Fortress

The historical data suggests a robust advantage for Liverpool when playing at Anfield. “Liverpool have won their first league game of the year in only three of the last 10 years. However, when beginning a calendar year at Anfield, they are unbeaten in their last eight Premier League games.” This statistic will be a comforting factor for the Reds, as starting the year with a victory can set the tone for the forthcoming fixtures.

Manchester United’s Away Day Blues

On the contrary, Manchester United’s struggles at Anfield continue to be a concern, with the team not winning any of their last eight league away games against Liverpool. Their inability to score, having netted just one goal in their last eight Premier League visits to Anfield, further complicates their challenge.

Key Tactical Considerations

Looking at today's game, both teams will need to manage their strategies carefully. Liverpool’s high-scoring form suggests they will continue to press aggressively, utilising Salah’s stellar form. For Manchester United, finding a way to break down Liverpool’s defence while managing their own defensive vulnerabilities will be key to changing their fortunes at Anfield.

Anfield Index Analysis

As a staunch Liverpool supporter, it’s hard not to feel optimistic about our chances in the upcoming clash against Manchester United. The statistics are more than just numbers; they tell a story of dominance and rising momentum. Salah’s electrifying performances have become a cornerstone of our success, and with Arne Slot at the helm, there seems to be a fresh tactical approach that could very well redefine our season. The prospect of achieving a league double over United, something that hasn’t been done since George Kay’s era, is thrilling. There’s every reason to believe that we can extend our unbeaten run and perhaps, just perhaps, this could be the start of another historic unbeaten streak that carries us to Premier League glory once again.

In conclusion, today’s fixture is not just another game in the Premier League calendar; it’s a testament to Liverpool’s resilience and a showcase of Salah’s brilliance. With history in the making and records on the line, Anfield is set to witness yet another memorable chapter in its illustrious history.

Three Liverpool players close to suspension

Three Liverpool stars are walking a disciplinary tightrope ahead of Liverpool's trip to the London Stadium to face West Ham United.

Darwin Nunez, Ryan Gravenberch and Cody Gakpo have all received four cautions already this season and if any receive a fifth against the Hammers, they will receive a one-match suspension as a result. Premier League rules state if players collect five yellow cards in the competition in the opening 19 matches, that they will be punished.

That sees the Reds players having to navigate past Julen Lopetegui's side without a caution, and also past Manchester United. The January clash against the Red Devils will be Arne Slot's 19th Premier League match in charge.

Ibrahima Konate has also collected four yellow cards this term but is set to miss out on Sunday through injury. The Frenchman is yet to return to training and will also be a doubt against United.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is also in danger of a ban if he is cautioned in each of the next two matches. The almost(out-of-contract star currently sits on three yellow cards.

If Liverpool's at-risk stars avoid picking up their fifth booking by the time the final whistle is blown against Ruben Amorim's men next week, they will then be free of worry until they near 10 cautions. Following the 19th match of a team's season, players are suspended for two games if they hit that mark.

Reds boss Arne Slot is without midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai against the Irons due to suspension following his fifth yellow card of the season. Conor Bradley is to miss the match due to injury in addition to Konate.

Slot said: “They will not be back for West Ham United, but then there is a week in between (before the game against Manchester United) so let’s see how close they are then.

"It’s difficult for me to tell you at this moment because they don’t train with the group yet, but hopefully in the upcoming days they come closer to that situation. And then again, Ibou has been out then for five or six weeks maybe, Conor just as long I think, the same amount.

“And also for them, they are in competition with players that are completely fit and doing really well, so I have to make the right judgement the moment they are back with the team."
