Liverpool won their opening friendly of the summer by claiming a 3-1 victory over Preston North End.
The Reds’ first match since the tragic passing of Diogo Jota and Andre Silva was preceded by several moving tributes to the brothers, who lost their lives last week.
Arne Slot opted to field two separate XIs in each half at Deepdale on Sunday afternoon, with the first-half line-up featuring Giorgi Mamardashvili and the second-half team including Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez.
Conor Bradley opened the scoring soon after the half-hour mark, Darwin Nunez made it 2-0 in the early stages of the second period and Cody Gakpo added a third late on, after Liam Lindsay had replied for Preston.
The Premier League champions therefore began preparing for 2025-26 by winning a game that will mainly be remembered for honouring Diogo and Andre.
First half
After an impeccably observed period of silence, Liverpool’s pre-season programme began and it was Rio Ngumoha – starting on the left of the front three, with Federico Chiesa central and captain Mohamed Salah on the right – who offered their primary early threat.
Ngumoha immediately showed his willingness to drive at his full-back and, a quarter of an hour in, cut inside and shot after the pitch had been opened up by a trademark Ryan Gravenberch turn in midfield.
Chiesa was thwarted by a fine last-ditch challenge by Preston defender Lewis Gibson, whose initial misjudgement on the halfway line had presented the Reds’ No.14 with an opportunity to bear down on goal.
On the 20-minute mark, the whole stadium rose to applaud as an image of Diogo and Andre was displayed on the big screen. Our No.20 for eternity was duly honoured by a near-10-minute rendition of his song, which was chanted heartily, with pride and love, by those in the away end.
Then, after Dominik Szoboszlai had seen an effort saved, the champions’ first goal of the summer was scored by Bradley.
Ngumoha was again involved, the teenager this time linking up with Chiesa, who in turn sought out Szoboszlai. The No.8’s attempt on goal then found its way to Bradley, who finished with ease at the back post.
Second half
A new Liverpool side emerged for the second 45 and Nunez quickly doubled the advantage in opportunistic fashion.
The striker latched on to an under-hit backpass and rounded goalkeeper Daniel Iversen before slotting home and, touchingly, recreating a couple of Jota’s goal celebrations in front of the Reds’ supporters.
Curtis Jones fizzed a strike goalwards after adventurous work from Frimpong, who dribbled inside with intent from the right flank.
Preston then pulled one back inside the final 10 minutes through a powerful Lindsay header, but Gakpo had the final say.
Ben Doak’s pass located the No.18 thanks to a clever dummy from Nunez and Gakpo finished coolly before fittingly signing the number 20 to the away end.

Liverpool are set to sign Freddie Woodman on a free transfer.
The 28-year-old has agreed a contract with the Reds to bolster the goalkeeping ranks upon the expiry of his previous deal with Preston North End.
A former England U21 international, Woodman made 138 appearances during his three-year spell at Deepdale, winning the club's Player of the Year award for 2022-23.
The 'keeper has also previously represented a handful of other clubs in England and Scotland, including Newcastle United, Swansea City and Kilmarnock.
Woodman will begin pre-season training with Arne Slot's squad when they reconvene at the AXA Training Centre next month.

Liverpool are close to signing goalkeeper Freddie Woodman on a free transfer from Preston North End.
The 28-year-old, who made 22 appearances for the Championship side last season, is approaching the end of his contract.
With Vitezslav Jaros and Harvey Davies both out on loan for next season, Liverpool want experienced cover for Alisson Becker and Giorgi Mamardashvili, who is due to complete his transfer from Valencia on 1 July.
The reds sold Caoimhin Kelleher to Brentford earlier this year for a fee that could reach £18m.
Woodman - who won the World Cup with England Under-20s in 2017 - has played for Newcastle United, Kilmarnock and Swansea City as well as Preston.
Woodman meets the criteria for an 'association trained' player so therefore does not need to take one of Liverpool's 17 non-homegrown slots on the Uefa squad list.
Woodman's dad, Andrew, is the manager of League Two side Bromley and his godfather is former England coach Gareth Southgate.

Liverpool were edged out 1-0 by Preston North End in a behind-closed-doors pre-season friendly at the AXA Training Centre on Friday.
The match was the first of any kind for the senior team since new head coach Arne Slot was appointed earlier this summer, and played amid sunshine in Kirkby.
The Reds – for whom 25 players got minutes – fashioned several promising chances, particularly during the first half, but it was the visitors who found the only goal, Robbie Brady scoring with an excellent effort from distance.
The game was just three minutes old when the home side released Ben Doak into space via the left channel. The forward lined up a strike as he moved in on the angle but was blocked out by Brad Potts at the last.
From their next chance, Mohamed Salah narrowly cleared the crossbar with a good volley from inside the area after Preston had only partially cleared Kostas Tsimikas’ cross on an overlap down the left.
Both Harvey Elliott and Conor Bradley saw edge-of-the-box efforts deflected just wide to the right, and from the latter restart, Doak flicked a header off target when picked out free at the far post.
Liverpool were enjoying the vast majority of the ball and they carved out another strong chance with 26 on the clock. A dinked ball into the box was invitingly sent across the face of goal by Salah for Elliott, whose attempt to nudge in was denied as Preston goalkeeper Freddie Woodman reacted quickly to get palms on it.
And then against the run of play, just shy of the half-hour mark, the visitors found the net instead. Brady stole possession as the Reds tried to play out from the back and quickly clipped a clinical long-ranger that flew over Vitezslav Jaros and went in off the upright.
Slot deployed 10 changes to the Liverpool team at the outset of the second half, in which the opening 15 minutes passed by without any true goalmouth action at either end.
Luke Chambers swerved a 25-yarder too high as the contest moved towards its final quarter, and Lewis Koumas got too much on a shot soon after, having been teed up for the strike by Tyler Morton’s forward pass.
Slot’s men continued to try to turn their greater share of the ball into an equaliser; only an important block denied Trey Nyoni when he shimmied into the area and blasted at goal, before a low volley from Kaide Gordon was caught by the ’keeper.
But Preston held firm to preserve their one-goal advantage and the Reds now turn focus towards their three-match tour of the USA, which begins on Tuesday.
