Match Report

A late, deflected Rio Ngumoha goal helped Liverpool edge out Wrexham 1-0 in their pre-season fixture in New York on Wednesday evening.

The 17-year-old had an effort take a ricochet inside the area that looped the ball over the goalkeeper and into the net with 15 minutes left, to settle the contest at Yankee Stadium in the Reds’ favour.

It means Andoni Iraola’s side have won both outings on their USA tour so far, with a further match against Leeds United in Chicago to follow on Sunday.

After the 4-2 victory over Sunderland in Iraola’s first game in charge in Nashville last weekend, the head coach made a handful of changes to the starting line-up, including berths for Milos Kerkez and Dominik Szoboszlai, with the latter wearing the captain’s armband.

Liverpool could have taken the lead inside three minutes at Yankee Stadium. It was Szoboszlai who played a threaded pass into the path of Harvey Elliott in midfield, who in turn slipped Josh Abe in behind. The youngster’s effort was repelled by former Reds stopper Danny Ward, however.

Shortly after, Lewis Koumas went early with a low shot across goal from just outside the area that didn’t evade the bottom corner by much at all.

At the other end, Wrexham threatened when Sam Smith pounced on a ricochet inside the box, but saw his drive at close range deflect off Ifeanyi Ndukwe and spin over the crossbar.

The forward was involved again when he got a touch to a bouncing ball from a long pass forward, which had Giorgi Mamardashvili advancing from his goalline. The ’keeper managed to get his body in the way of the ball to eliminate the danger.

On 33 minutes, Koumas asked in vain for a penalty when he claimed he had been tripped by Dan Scarr after attempting to meet Szoboszlai’s through ball, but those appeals were waved away.

Four changes were made by Iraola during the break, but Wrexham had an early chance as a cross to the back post from the left dropped for Ryan Longman, but he could only skew wide as he stretched to reach the ball.

At the other end, tenacious play by Koumas kept a ball alive on the left before he found Elliott on the edge of the box. His swipe at goal was parried by Ward as it made its way towards the bottom corner.

The goalkeeper was called into action again soon after, getting behind a crisp Szoboszlai touch and hit from just outside the area.

A Nathan Broadhead thump from distance required a diving save from Mamardashvili as Wrexham threatened, but Liverpool took the lead with 15 minutes remaining.

Szoboszlai rolled the ball to Ngumoha midway inside the opposition half. He ran at a back-peddling defensive line before arriving into the box, where a low shot took a deflection off Lewis Brunt and looped over substitute stopper Callum Burton.

The Championship side spurned a late chance to grab a draw when Kieffer Moore scuffed over from Brunt’s delivery at point-blank range, ensuring it’s two from two for Liverpool so far on their tour of the USA.

Andoni Iraola’s Liverpool tenure began with a 4-2 victory over Sunderland in Nashville on Saturday evening.

In the first pre-season friendly of the summer, Kieran Morrison opened the scoring at GEODIS Park on 12 minutes by converting neatly with a well-placed shot across goal.

Enzo Le Fee levelled for the Black Cats with a long-range effort soon after, and Timur Tutierov put them in front minutes past half-time.

However, the Reds were dominant throughout the second period and Dominik Szoboszlai made it 2-2 with 56 minutes gone when he collected a ricochet just outside the area and crisply struck the bouncing ball into the near post.

Federico Chiesa then swept Liverpool in front with an angled finish from the corner of the six-yard box, then Lewis Koumas put the result beyond doubt with a well-taken effort inside the area.

Iraola’s first starting line-up contained a mix of youth and experience, with Joe Gomez wearing the captain’s armband.

But the centre-back’s involvement came to a premature end when he was forced from the field with a knock inside the opening 10 minutes.

Ifeanyi Ndukwe replaced Gomez, with Kostas Tsimikas taking over the captaincy.

Nevertheless, Liverpool took the lead on 12. A break forward resulted in Harvey Elliott sliding a pass to Morrison on the right of the area. The forward stepped inside before slipping a low, left-footed shot into the bottom corner.

Sunderland drew level when Le Fee collected possession just inside the Reds’ half, powered towards the edge of the box and beat Giorgi Mamardashvili with a well-hit drive on 28 minutes played.

They went close to going ahead but Mamardashvili parried from Romaine Mundle before James McConnell threw himself in front of Chris Rigg’s follow-up.

As the half drew to a conclusion, it was Sunderland who threatened again, but the teams returned to their dressing rooms with the scoreline locked at 1-1.

Iraola opted to make five further changes during the break – but it was the Black Cats who went in front four minutes after the restart.

Tutierov collected a nudge into the box from Tom Proctor and hooked an effort beyond Mamardashvili from close range.

Liverpool could have restored parity quickly, but Milos Kerkez couldn’t quite manage to divert Jeremie Frimpong’s delivery in from six yards out with his head.

However, a sublime Szoboszlai half-volley grabbed an equaliser for the Reds as he controlled a loose ball on his chest outside the box and found the inside of the near post.

Then, Calum Scanlon was a fraction away from making it 3-2 but he couldn’t direct Morrison’s low ball across goal into the net at the back post while on the stretch.

By now, Iraola’s charges were in the ascendancy and Sunderland required a sprawling stop from Melker Ellborg to thwart Koumas’ attempt to dink an effort over him.

But the Sunderland ’keeper could do little to prevent Chiesa restoring Liverpool’s lead. The No.14 was picked out by a pass into space from Calvin Ramsay and he found the net with an unerring finish from the corner of the six-yard box.

Koumas wrapped up the scoring and sealed the outcome with four minutes remaining when he collected a Szoboszlai pass, stepped inside Leo Hjelde and converted with aplomb from 10 yards.

Liverpool recorded a 3-2 victory over Athletic Club in their second Anfield encounter of the day with the La Liga side on Monday.

Mohamed Salah steered the Reds into an early lead, finishing with trademark aplomb from Hugo Ekitike’s cut back across the area.

Oihan Sancet levelled for the opposing side on 29 minutes following a set-piece, but Cody Gakpo restored the home side’s advantage when he converted from close range shortly after half-time.

Athletic Club then equalised for a second time, Maroan Sannadi finding the net via a deflection with a header at a corner.

The touch had come off Gakpo inside the area; however, the Netherlands forward would once again put Liverpol in front by drilling a low shot across goal and under Unai Simon in what would prove the game's deciding moment.

Five of Liverpol’s summer arrivals were handed Anfield debuts for the club, with Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Giorgi Mamardashvili and Florian Wirtz named in the XI.

Virgil van Dijk missed out due to illness, so Salah took the captain’s armband. Conor Bradley was also absent due to a minor injury.

First half

Having netted four times in the day’s earlier fixture between the sides, the Reds almost made the perfect start in this one, too.

A counter-attack resulted in Ekitike sending Gakpo racing down the left. His cross into the centre took Simon out of the game and found the head of Wirtz, who looped an effort onto the roof of the net with five minutes played.

Then, shortly after, a free-kick routine on the edge of the area saw Salah roll the ball off to Dominik Szoboszlai, whose powerful drive was parried by the visitors’ goalkeeper.

An even better opening would be fashioned as the Anfield scoreboard showed 13 minutes, with Salah playing a remarkable pass across the box for Gakpo. A scoop towards the far post skidded just wide.

Nevertheless, Liverpool’s early pressure would duly tell. Szoboszlai prodded a pass into space for Ekitike to run into. He skipped beyond Daniel Vivian with a double step-over and cut it back across the area, where Salah collected – albeit with a slight touch of fortune - and steered into the net.

One could have been two inside 60 seconds, but Wirtz’s hook at goal from a Salah centre was parried by Simon.

However, for all of the Reds’ dominance, Athletic Club levelled just before the half-hour mark when Inigo Ruiz de Galarreta’s free-kick towards the back post from deep was nudged back into the area by Vivian, allowing Sancet to take a touch and swipe in from 10 yards.

Ryan Gravenberch’s powerful blast from range threatened to put the hosts back in front almost immediately, but Simon pushed over the crossbar.

Second half

Ekitike had the half’s first effort on goal six minutes in, clipping a low drive towards the corner from Salah’s pass; however, it lacked the power to truly trouble Simon.

A better opening would arrive on 55 as Liverpool sped forward on a counter. Kerkez stood a ball up into the centre from the byline, Ekitike headed down for Gapko and his shot into the ground was tipped over by Simon.

However, a moment later, the No.18 did have his name on the scoresheet. Gravenberch’s shimmy on the edge of the area enabled him room to strike and though the ‘keeper managed to block, Gakpo was on hand to stab in the rebound.

But Gakpo was inadvertently to have a hand in Athletic Club’s second equaliser 10 minutes later when Sannadi’s header from a corner took a sizeable deflection off him to beat Mamardashvili.

His influence on the night wasn’t done there, though, and he would ensure the Reds regained the advantage when a low shot across goal proved too much for Simon to keep out.

As the game entered its final stages, 17-year-old Will Wright was introduced from the bench having finalised a transfer from Salford City last week. He took the place of Wirtz, who received a standing ovation as he departed the field.

Liverpool had an opportunity to tighten their grip on the contest when Wataru Endo was fouled inside the box by Vivian, but Salah struck the resulting spot-kick over the bar.

Mamardashvili foiled Adu Ares’ curling effort to keep the Reds’ advantage intact, while Simon foiled Wright with a block at the other end.

But a highly satisfying day’s work for Slot and his side would concluded in a second victory as attention now turns to Sunday’s Community Shield encounter with Crystal Palace at Wembley.

Pre-Season Friendly Liverpool 4:1 Athletic Club Match Report

Liverpool defeated Athletic Club 4-1 in the first of their two pre-season meetings at Anfield on Monday.

Rio Ngumoha, who only turns 17 at the end of the month, opened the scoring with a terrific solo effort and assisted Darwin Nunez to put the Reds two goals up inside five minutes.

Ben Doak netted the hosts’ third just prior to half-time and was joined on the scoresheet by Harvey Elliott later on, with Gorka Guruzeta netting a consolation.

Alexis Mac Allister made his first start of Liverpool’s pre-season programme and Andy Robertson took the captain’s armband.

First half

Eighty-seven seconds were on the clock when Ngumoha was wheeling away celebrating his first goal at Anfield.

The speedster pounced on a free ball near the halfway line and turned on his jets by driving towards the Kop-end net. The intentful run ended with a curling finish into the bottom right corner, beating the full-stretch Alex Padilla.

Three minutes later, Ngumoha teed up Nunez to cap off a blistering start from the Reds and the teenager himself.

A Doak cross from the right was delivered into the box and met by his fellow winger, with Nunez alert to sweep home the nod forward.

The game paused in the 20th minute as both teams joined in the tributes to Diogo Jota and Andre Silva, sparking loud renditions of the former’s chant.

As the first half reached its midway point, Doak was close to catching out Padilla with a cross-turned-shot and Nico Serrano’s volley nearly halved Athletic’s deficit.

Trey Nyoni was operating as a centre-half for Liverpool in the opening period and brilliantly cut out Alex Berenguer’s intended square that would have allowed Serrano a great chance in front of goal.

The Reds’ deserved lead would be three when they entered the break.

A few moments after having a 25-yarder palmed away by Padilla, Doak charged down the right, beat Peio Canales and fired low past the visiting goalkeeper on this occasion.

Second half

Armin Pecsi for Freddie Woodman was Liverpool’s only change for the restart, and the young stopper came out on top in an early one-on-one with Guruzeta.

Meanwhile at the other end, Elliott poked a finish past Padilla to make it 4-0 after Kostas Tsimikas carried possession upfield and found Nunez inside the area.

Guruzeta, however, beat Pecsi on his next sighting of goal to pull one back for the La Liga visitors entering the final quarter of an hour, heading in from close range.

Substitute Lewis Koumas forced a save with the Reds’ last opportunity as attention immediately turned towards the second clash when the final whistle blew.
