Premier League 25/26 Matchday 28 - Liverpool v West Ham United Match Report

Match Report

Liverpool beat West Ham United 5-2 at Anfield to record a fourth consecutive win across all competitions.

First-half goals by Hugo Ekitike, Virgil van Dijk and Alexis Mac Allister put the Reds into a commanding lead at the break, before Tomas Soucek pulled one back for the visitors in the opening stages of the second period.

Cody Gakpo then made it 4-1 prior to Valentin Castellanos again reducing West Ham’s arrears, and the scoring was rounded off in the closing stages when Jeremie Frimpong’s cross was inadvertently diverted into his own net by Axel Disasi.

In the Premier League, Arne Slot’s side are now level on points with fourth-placed Manchester United, who play on Sunday, and three behind Aston Villa in third.

Team

Joe Gomez came in for Curtis Jones in the only Liverpool change from last weekend’s win at Nottingham Forest.

First half

It took only five minutes for Liverpool to go ahead through Ekitike.

West Ham were unable to clear their lines from a corner and Ryan Gravenberch found Ekitike in the area, the forward taking a touch before burying a half-volley into the near bottom corner.

The visitors’ response included a couple of set-pieces from which Konstantinos Mavropanos missed half-chances to equalise and, soon after, it was 2-0.

Dominik Szoboszlai delivered an inswinging corner and Van Dijk glanced home with a near-post header.

Alert defending by Ibrahima Konate was required to thwart Crysencio Summervillle after a loose Gravenberch pass had been intercepted by Jarrod Bowen.

And then, at the other end, another set-piece resulted in another Liverpool goal. Mohamed Salah took the corner this time and the ball found its way to Ekitike at the back post.

The No.22 showed awareness and technique to cushion a lay-off into Mac Allister, who dispatched a perfectly executed volley high into the net.

Second half

West Ham caught the Reds cold at the beginning of the second half as Soucek slid home El Hadji Malick Diouf’s low cross.

Gakpo missed a huge chance to quickly restore Liverpool’s three-goal cushion – the No.18 skewing wide from close range – and Alisson Becker then stopped a speculative hit from distance by Mateus Fernandes.

And, with 20 minutes left to play, the comfort of the Reds’ advantage was increased again by Gakpo, who shimmied in-field and finished into the bottom corner.

A brilliant fingertip save by Alisson prevented Summerville from scoring but, from the resulting corner, Castellanos nodded in to make it 4-2.

After five games out due to injury, Frimpong returned from the bench and made an immediate impact as Disasi redirected his delivery past goalkeeper Mads Hermansen to complete the scoring.

Liverpool 2:1 Everton Women FA Cup Match Report

Liverpool defeated Everton 2-1 in the fifth round of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup.

The Reds won Sunday’s Merseyside derby at St Helens Stadium thanks to first-half goals by Mia Enderby and Beata Olsson. Enderby had to be stretchered off due to an injury sustained while scoring, with Olsson her replacement from the bench.

Everton pulled one back with a little less than 20 minutes left through a Jennifer Falk own goal, the goalkeeper unfortunate as Aurora Galli’s effort struck the post then hit her on the back before crossing the line.

But Gareth Taylor’s side then showed impressive game management to book their place in the quarter-finals, the draw for which will take place on Monday evening.

Enderby had the game’s first sight of goal as she shot wide from the edge of the area and, after Falk had done well to beat Yuka Momiti to a long ball, it was Enderby who opened the scoring with 34 minutes on the clock.

Martha Thomas found Ceri Holland, whose delivery was outstanding throughout the afternoon.

Holland sent in a cross to the back post and Enderby bravely attempted a header knowing she was going to collide with Everton ’keeper Courtney Brosnan, with the ball hitting the forward’s foot before going in.

Enderby was carried off and Taylor introduced Olsson. On the stroke of half-time, the substitute notched with a typical poacher’s finish.

Another excellent ball in by Holland caused chaos in the Everton penalty area and Olsson reacted quickest to squeeze the ball beyond Brosnan from close range.

Liverpool began the second half in dominant fashion and Everton needed two fine saves by Brosnan to deny Jenna Clark and Cornelia Kapocs.

Brosnan somehow thwarted Thomas from point-blank range and the Blues then gained a foothold in the second half, with Falk making a superb stop to tip Imma Gabarro’s low strike wide.

But there was nothing the Liverpool ’keeper could do to prevent Everton from halving their deficit in minute 72 as Galli’s first-time hit rebounded in off Falk via the foot of the post.

Hikaru Kitagawa saw a deflected attempt well saved by Falk as the visitors sought to level, but the introduction of Aurélie Csillag off the bench gave the Reds an injection of energy and attacking threat.

Indeed, it was the hosts who looked most likely to score again in the closing stages and Olsson saw a goal ruled out for handball, but Liverpool had already done enough to earn their spot in the last eight.

Team

Liverpool: Falk, Shimizu, Clark, Fisk, Bernabe, Nagano, O’Sullivan, Kapocs, Enderby (Olsson, 38), Holland, Thomas (Csillag, 81).

Unused subs: Laws, Kirby, Evans, Woodham, Bonner, McDonald, Trueman.

Premier League 25/26 Matchday 27 - Nottingham Forest 0:1 Liverpool Match Report

Match Report

Alexis Mac Allister's stoppage-time goal secured Liverpool a 1-0 victory at Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

The midfielder settled the Premier League encounter at the City Ground with 90+7 minutes on the clock by converting from close range.

He thought he had netted the winner a few moments before, only to have an effort chalked off by VAR for attacking handball in a frantic conclusion.

Team

Liverpool needed to make a late change as Florian Wirtz was forced to drop out following the warm up, with Curtis Jones called up from the bench.

Elsewhere, Hugo Ekitike and Ryan Gravenberch returned to the line-up after starting the win over Brighton & Hove Albion in the Emirates FA Cup as substitutes.

First half

Alisson Becker prevented the hosts from taking the lead inside three minutes by coming out to smother a finish from Callum Hudson-Odoi, who latched onto the through ball of Ibrahim Sangare.

Elliot Anderson and Omari Hutchinson threatened with efforts before Liverpool's first sniff of an opportunity arrived with 36 minutes on the clock.

A poor clearance from Murillo was pounced on, but Mohamed Salah's delivery into the area was just out of the reach of Cody Gakpo at the back post.

Another Forest attack forced Virgil van Dijk into a vital interception, the centre-half pinching the ball off Igor Jesus just as he looked to fire at goal from inside the box.

The half ended with Alisson touching over a cross-turned-shot from Hutchinson and Anderson curling off target.

Second half

Chances fell to both sides shortly after the interval, the first of which was a Nikola Milenkovic header that fell wide.

Jones was then thwarted by Stefan Ortega from close range after he met Salah's nod back across goal off a switch of play.

From then on, it was an even but scrappy affair and openings were hard to come by.

Andy Robertson's first involvement was blocking a Morgan Gibbs-White hit that appeared to be on target, with Sangare dragging the rebound wide.

The Reds thought they had snatched the victory before the added time.

Ortega clawed away Hugo Ekitike's header and Ola Aina attempted to clear the danger. Mac Allister blocked the clearance and it deflected in – only for VAR to rule he did so with his arm.

But the Argentinian would be celebrating in front of the away end again.

Van Dijk headed Dominik Szoboszlai's cross into the box towards goal and Ortega could only parry it out.

And first to pounce on the loose ball was Mac Allister, who made no mistake from a few yards out and was then relieved to see this effort survive another VAR check.

Chelsea 2:0 Liverpool Women Match Report

Liverpool lost 2-0 away to Chelsea in the Barclays Women’s Super League.

Goals in either half by Sjoeke Nusken and Lauren James settled Sunday afternoon’s game at Kingsmeadow, where the Reds created several half-chances but were unable to capitalise.

Alice Bergstrom, restored to the Liverpool starting XI, had the ball in the net in the early stages, but was penalised for handball and the goal was disallowed.

Amid torrential rain, Ceri Holland saw a powerful drive parried by Hannah Hampton and, after an encouraging start by the Reds, Chelsea’s grip on proceedings tightened as the first half wore on.

Gareth Taylor’s side were well organised defensively, though, meaning Jennifer Falk was untroubled before Nusken’s opener, which came from the hosts’ first shot on target.

James cut inside and whipped in a low cross from the left, with Nusken darting to the near post and adeptly diverting the ball beyond Falk from close range.

Bergstrom was hurt in the act of attempting to stop James and was substituted at the break, Mia Enderby her replacement.

It was Liverpool who began the second half on top, with Cornelia Kapocs engineering a chance for herself by dispossessing Keira Walsh, only to miscue her attempt from the edge of the penalty area.

Martha Thomas saw a shot saved by Hampton before working herself an angle for another opportunity by skipping away from Naomi Girma. This time, however, her effort was wayward.

Chelsea’s ruthlessness in attack was the difference and midway through the half, James doubled their lead with a fine strike from 20 yards.

Falk got the better of Chelsea substitute Sam Kerr in a one-on-one before Taylor introduced Aurélie Csillag from the bench.

Csillag then made a final sight of goal for the Reds, but her low delivery from the right was hit over the crossbar by Holland.

Liverpool: Falk, Shimizu, Clark, Fisk, Bernabe, Nagano, O’Sullivan, Kapocs (Maclean, 83), Bergstrom (Enderby, 46), Thomas (Csillag, 75), Holland.

Unused subs: Kirby, Parry, Evans, Olsson, Woodham, Bonner.
