Match Report
Alexis Mac Allister's stoppage-time goal secured Liverpool a 1-0 victory at Nottingham Forest on Sunday.
The midfielder settled the Premier League encounter at the City Ground with 90+7 minutes on the clock by converting from close range.
He thought he had netted the winner a few moments before, only to have an effort chalked off by VAR for attacking handball in a frantic conclusion.
Team
Liverpool needed to make a late change as Florian Wirtz was forced to drop out following the warm up, with Curtis Jones called up from the bench.
Elsewhere, Hugo Ekitike and Ryan Gravenberch returned to the line-up after starting the win over Brighton & Hove Albion in the Emirates FA Cup as substitutes.
First half
Alisson Becker prevented the hosts from taking the lead inside three minutes by coming out to smother a finish from Callum Hudson-Odoi, who latched onto the through ball of Ibrahim Sangare.
Elliot Anderson and Omari Hutchinson threatened with efforts before Liverpool's first sniff of an opportunity arrived with 36 minutes on the clock.
A poor clearance from Murillo was pounced on, but Mohamed Salah's delivery into the area was just out of the reach of Cody Gakpo at the back post.
Another Forest attack forced Virgil van Dijk into a vital interception, the centre-half pinching the ball off Igor Jesus just as he looked to fire at goal from inside the box.
The half ended with Alisson touching over a cross-turned-shot from Hutchinson and Anderson curling off target.
Second half
Chances fell to both sides shortly after the interval, the first of which was a Nikola Milenkovic header that fell wide.
Jones was then thwarted by Stefan Ortega from close range after he met Salah's nod back across goal off a switch of play.
From then on, it was an even but scrappy affair and openings were hard to come by.
Andy Robertson's first involvement was blocking a Morgan Gibbs-White hit that appeared to be on target, with Sangare dragging the rebound wide.
The Reds thought they had snatched the victory before the added time.
Ortega clawed away Hugo Ekitike's header and Ola Aina attempted to clear the danger. Mac Allister blocked the clearance and it deflected in – only for VAR to rule he did so with his arm.
But the Argentinian would be celebrating in front of the away end again.
Van Dijk headed Dominik Szoboszlai's cross into the box towards goal and Ortega could only parry it out.
And first to pounce on the loose ball was Mac Allister, who made no mistake from a few yards out and was then relieved to see this effort survive another VAR check.

Match Report
Liverpool were beaten 3-0 by Nottingham Forest in Saturday's Premier League clash at Anfield.
Murillo's finish against the run of play on 33 minutes put the visiting team in front on club football's resumption.
Nicolo Savona then added to their tally immediately after half-time and Morgan Gibbs-White later netted to consign the reigning champions to defeat.
Team
Alisson Becker was named in the Reds starting XI for the first time since September 30, one of five changes made by Arne Slot.
Summer signing Alexander Isak also came in, while Dominik Szoboszlai was deployed as a right-back.
First half
Liverpool were on the front foot early, and unfortunate not to get themselves in front inside 10 minutes.
Cody Gakpo's snaking run to the byline and pullback fell to Alexis Mac Allister, whose finish was blocked en route to goal.
Once the ball was recycled, Milos Kerkez then found the Argentinian in a similar position and again Forest got a body in the way of his strike.
Next, Mohamed Salah's fleet steps inside the opposition box allowed him to serve a cross to Kerkez, but the No.6 scuffed his effort off target.
Gakpo saw a chance deflected behind from close range and Curtis Jones curled one too high after a clever routine from a corner.
There was a straightforward save low to Alisson's left when Murillo bustled Gakpo off the ball and tried his luck from distance.
From a burst of pace off the flank, Gakpo shaped a shot towards the far corner that was blocked, and Szoboszlai's crisp hit was also foiled off an opponent.
When the breakthrough came, though, it was for Forest.
Their corner from the left-hand side was only partially cleared inside the area and Murillo pounced on the loose ball with a lash into the bottom left.
The visiting fans were celebrating again moments later, but this time there was a reprieve for the Reds.
Igor Jesus had guided a finish into the same section of the Liverpool net. Via a VAR review, it was judged he had handled in the build-up.
Matz Sels caught Mac Allister's looping header and beat away Salah's toe-poke as Forest held their lead into half-time.
Second half
The away side's advantage would be doubled within a minute of the restart.
Neco Williams escaped into space on the left side of the Reds box and his centre was touched into the right of the goal by the arriving Savona.
Slot soon called for Hugo Ekitike in place of Ibrahima Konate and recalibrated his set-up, Ryan Gravenberch dropping into defence and Jones and Szoboszlai switching roles.
Salah dragged a low finish wide having been sent into the area by Szoboszlai's flicked pass off the heel.
Liverpool continued to press for a way back into the contest, but Forest put any points beyond them on 78 minutes.
Omari Hutchinson cut into the area from the right and fired a shot on the angle. Alisson's strong save became academic when the rebound was driven home by Gibbs-White.

Match Report
Liverpool recorded a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forest at Anfield on Sunday to maintain their promising start to the Premier League season.
Diogo Jota swept the Reds into the lead on 31 minutes when he pounced to covert after Matt Turner had saved from Darwin Nunez.
Nunez himself then got on the scoresheet soon after, turning in a low Dominik Szoboszlai centre from close range.
Mohamed Salah added Liverpool’s third in the 77th minute when he capitalised on an error from Forest goalkeeper Turner and rolled the ball into an unguarded net from outside the box.
In doing so, the Egyptian became only the third man in the club’s history to score in each of the opening five home league matches of a season and capped a good afternoon’s work from Jürgen Klopp’s side.
Team news
Liverpool made seven changes from the victory over Toulouse on Thursday night, with only Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ryan Gravenberch, Jota and Nunez retaining their places in the line-up.
First half
Liverpool kicked off at Anfield aiming to make it a hat-trick of wins in the space of little over a week at home.
Indeed, it was the hosts who seized the early initiative and a Salah pass over the top almost presented a chance for Nunez with four minutes gone, but his swipe on the turn was collected by Turner.
Jota then failed to connect properly with a headed opportunity from a corner, sending an effort into the ground and the gloves of the visiting goalkeeper.
Forest, though, were defending resolutely. An around-the-corner pass from Salah almost released Gravenberch into a shooting position from close range, but he was crowded out by Willy Boly.
On 29, the Reds forced their best chance of the contest so far when Salah sent Nunez speeding into space inside the box. His drive towards the near post from a narrow angle was parried by Turner.
The resulting corner then saw the No.9 plant a firm header over from the crossbar from a central position.
Nevertheless, the pressure finally told just after the half-hour. Alexis Mac Allister won possession back just inside Liverpool’s half to start a counter, which resulted in Salah sliding a pass into the path of Nunez.
His powerful thump across goal was beaten away by Turner, but Jota was on hand to sweep in the rebound.
The forward raced to the side of the pitch before holding up a shirt bearing the name of Luis Diaz in a show of support to his teammate.
One would become two soon after. Szoboszlai and Salah exchanged passes on the right before the former cut the ball back from the touchline, enabling Nunez to hammer in from point-blank range.
By now, Turner was being kept busy and he was required to make two saves in quick succession to thwart Gravenberch and Szoboszlai before the break.
Second half
The two first-half goals had put Liverpool in firm command of the game and the opening exchanges of the second period were an exercise in control.
A double change just before the hour saw Harvey Elliott and Cody Gakpo enter the action – and the former was instantly involved, having a goalbound effort deflected behind by Ola Aina.
Salah then flashed a free-kick over the bar from a good position, but Forest did spurn an opportunity to reduce the arrears when Nicolas Dominguez miscued from a square ball from Morgan Gibbs-White inside the box.
Salah did find the net with 13 minutes remaining, however, when he made the most of Turner’s misjudgment on the bounce of a long ball forward from Szoboszlai. With the goalkeeper well outside his area, the Egyptian was able to roll into the empty net from 25 yards.
It was the No.11’s 10th of the campaign so far – and one that saw him join Harry Chambers and John Aldridge in achieving the feat of scoring in each of the Reds’ first five home league matches of a season.
Gakpo went close when his near-post shot skimmed just wide, while Anthony Elanga smacked the underside of Alisson Becker’s crossbar with a volley as the contest edged into its final stages.
In stoppage time Gakpo tapped home from yards out and was denied by an offside review, but Liverpool’s work was already done. via liverpoolfc.com

Michael Owen blasted four goals in a senior game for the first time in his Liverpool career in response to being rested in midweek.
Liverpool, fearing burnt out, decided the 18-year-old England striker should start on the bench for the UEFA Cup clash with Valencia.
But Owen was restored to the starting line up at the expense of Robbie Fowler and took out his frustration on Forest.
Owen had scored only twice in 11 matches for club and country before today and the decision of Liverpool's joint managers Gerard Houllier and Roy Evans to give him a breather had looked a sound one.
But Owen insisted he was feeling fit and fresh and proved his point as he took Forest apart at Anfield. Owen has now plundered nine goals in 13 games this season and his Liverpool career record is 33 in 59 matches. Clearly his coaches should think about leaving him out more often if he reacts like this.
Forest started like men possessed but Liverpool were soon flowing forwards with McManaman a constant danger. He almost worked a superb opening after Vegard Heggem and Patrik Berger combined to put him away down the left.
The warning signs were there for Forest when a Berger corner was headed inches wide by Paul Ince.
And Thierry Bonalair's blocked denied Karlheinz Riedle after Owen had got clear on the right and provided the cross.
Liverpool's pressure paid off on 10 minutes, Owen firing them ahead with a stunning goal. Ince won a ferocious tackle in midfield that left him in a heap clutching his leg. The ball broke to Riedle, whose pass left Owen in acres of space to clinically curl a right footed shot into the far top corner.
It was Owen's first home goal of the season, and helped to redress the balance of a so-called goal drought that had seen him net just two in his previous 11 club and international games.
But Anfield was stunned when Dougie Freedman grabbed an 18th-minute equaliser for Forest. Steve Stone forced his way to the byline and pulled the ball back superbly for Freedman to drill his shot past David James.
Forest were on level terms for only five minutes with McManaman scoring his first goal of the season to make it 2-1. Owen and Riedle were quick to pounce on a Steve Chettle error, and the ball was moved at high speed across the area for McManaman to crash the ball into the roof of the net.
Ince deceived Dave Beasant with a 34th-minute snapshot from 18 yards that almost crept inside the near post.
But it was Owen, back to his high speed best, who grabbed the third when he ghosted into space on the left to take a Riedle pass and calmly fire his shot across Beasant into the far bottom corner.
Owen almost scored again after 41 minutes, when Beasant spilled a searing Ince drive, but the Forest keeper managed to dive at the little forward's feet as he was closing in to punish the error.
Forest showed plenty of spirit but they were outclassed in the second half.
Owen was a constant threat, hovering on the shoulder of the last defender and flying into open space onto a multitude of through passes.
Forest conceded a fourth from the penalty spot in the 71st minute. Alan Rogers brought down Riedle and Owen made no mistake to complete his hat-trick.
Owen grabbed his fourth goal in the 77th minute. He collected a long throw from David James and sprinted from the half way line.
Dave Beasant parried the England striker's initial effort but Owen latched onto the rebound to drive a follow up shot home.

LIVERPOOL yesterday completed a pointless start by the three clubs most favoured to contest the inaugural Premier League championship.
Featured in the first game to be televised live this season by BSkyB, Liverpool began their campaign later than Arsenal and Manchester United but the outcome was equally fruitless.
Moreover, the defeat could have been as embarrassing as that inflicted by Norwich City on Arsenal, a result which will form one of the surprises not only of the opening weekend but also of the whole season. Yet Liverpool are not, and perhaps will not be, the formidable side of old.
Outplayed and almost overwhelmed by Nottingham Forest throughout the first half, they looked more vulnerable at the back than they have been for three decades. If Graeme Souness persists with an obviously unsuitable formation, they are unlikely even to be among the principal contenders.
As was illustrated during the Charity Shield when they conceded four goals to Leeds United, their system of employing only three defenders is flawed. Tanner is not secure enough to operate with only two colleagues and Walters cannot offer the assistance required by a midfield player guarding a flank.
Whelan, stationed in front of the central trio, attempted to block the gaps which appeared around him and Wright tried to minimise the damage. Yet the understudy for Grobbelaar, who opted to represent Zimbabwe, was left to ponder the credibility of Liverpool's reputation.
James, who was acquired from Watford in the summer, was under siege for the first ten minutes and not until after the interval was he allowed even a temporary respite. By then Forest, tired by their own attacking exertions, were showing signs of fatigue.
They scored only once but the goal will have enhanced the interest which has recently centred on Sheringham. The tall centre forward, showing a significantly improved first touch and overall comfort on the ball, put them ahead with a spectacular strike on the half-hour.
Liverpool were convinced that he was offside when Gemmill threaded one of several incisive passes through their rearguard. Sheringham ignored their appeals, cut in from the left and unleashed a powerful drive diagonally beyond the reach of James.
Liverpool, unable to suppress the ideas of Clough, the runs of Keane and the movement of Sheringham, were regularly pierced. James had to block attempts from Keane and Clough in rapid succession and he closed the half by saving athletically again from Keane.
Rush subsequently withdrew with a groin strain and, although McManaman brought on with him a sense of positive urgency, Liverpool only once threatened to take a point away from a ground where they have not won for eight seasons.
Thomas spoiltthe opportunity by directing his effort at Crossley's legs. In the closing stages, Forest were denied a penalty which appeared to be as legitimate as Manchester United's claims at Sheffield United on Saturday. Keane fell under the impetus of James's spreadeagled frame but the referee who was otherwise consistently correct in all of his decisions visibly interpreted the stumble as a deliberate dive.
``I thought we could have scored a few more,'' Brian Clough, Forest's manager, claimed justifiably. He had insisted that his club would not miss the contribution of Walker, whose move to Sampdoria was completed during the summer. On this occasion, the opposition was not sufficiently inventive to expose the potential weakness.
Only half a dozen members of the Liverpoolteam which won last season's FA Cup were on view. Until they are restored to full strength and until their manager revises the personnel he requires to fit his system, their season is initially likely to prove uncomfortably unconvincing.
