Match Report

Liverpool were eliminated from the Champions League after a 2-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield.

The Reds bowed out of the competition at the quarter-final stage after defeat in both legs of their tie against the holders.

Two second-half finishes from Ousmane Dembele in L4 extended the visitors' aggregate lead to 4-0.

Team

Alexander Isak started for the first time since suffering his injury in December as one of five changes.

Hugo Ekitike, Ryan Gravenberch, Milos Kerkez and Alexis Mac Allister were the others restored to the XI.

First half

On the eve of the 37th anniversary of the Hillsborough tragedy, a period of silence was observed and a mosaic formed on the Kop ahead of kick-off. Both sets of players were wearing black armbands.

The two goalkeepers were forced into comfortable saves inside the opening six minutes; Khvicha Kvaratskhelia fired straight at Giorgi Mamardashvili and Matvei Safonov caught a header from Isak.

Dembele then went close on two occasions in quick succession.

The Frenchman's lob towards goal after Mamardashvili cut out an intended through ball for Warren Zaire-Emery was punched away by the retreating Liverpool goalkeeper, before a quickly taken throw-in presented him with a chance from six yards that he fired over.

Ekitike was carried off on a stretcher after slipping, leading to Salah being introduced from the bench.

The No.11's first involvement was a cross that nearly led to the opening goal. Kerkez bundled the delivery towards Safonov and Virgil van Dijk looked certain to convert the 'keeper's rebound, only for Marquinhos to produce a last-ditch block.

In the last few minutes of the half, Ibrahima Konate made an important intervention to stop Dembele poking in a centre from Achraf Hakimi.

Second half

A double change by the Reds at the break saw Joe Gomez and Cody Gakpo come on, and the two of them soon threatened to halve the deficit.

Gakpo's low drive from outside the box was pushed behind by Safonov, with Gomez heading the resulting corner over.

Liverpool were enjoying a dominant spell of pressure and next to go close was Gravenberch, who fired fractionally over from distance.

They thought they had a penalty in the 64th minute when the referee pointed to the spot after Mac Allister went down under a challenge from Willian Pacho. A VAR review overturned that decision, however.

With time ticking away, Rio Ngumoha was brought on to increase the hosts' attacking threat and he tested Safonov with a fierce strike that was on target.

But two minutes later, the tie was put beyond the Reds.

In a rare attack for PSG at that point in the half, Kvaratskhelia clipped the ball towards Dembele and he proceeded to curl past Mamardashvili from the edge of the area.

Their semi-final spot was wrapped up in stoppage time, when Dembele converted first-time from a Bradley Barcola pass.

Liverpool lost 2-0 to Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.

Wednesday night’s game at Parc des Princes was settled in the holders’ favour by goals in either half by Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

Doue scored early on, with the aid of a deflection, while Kvaratskhelia improved PSG’s position in the tie further by striking in minute 65.

The Reds – for whom Alexander Isak returned as a late substitute – must now overturn a two-goal deficit at Anfield next Tuesday to progress to a semi-final against either Bayern Munich or Real Madrid.

Team

Jeremie Frimpong and Alexis Mac Allister returned in place of Curtis Jones and Mohamed Salah as Arne Slot made two changes to Liverpool’s starting XI.

First half

PSG enjoyed plenty of early possession but Liverpool – who lined up with three centre-backs – were comfortable until their early defensive efforts were undone by misfortune in minute 11.

The ball found its way to Doue from a Ryan Gravenberch tackle and the forward stepped inside to shoot. His attempt then took a huge deflection off Virgil van Dijk and looped over Giorgi Mamardashvili.

The Reds responded to that setback positively and fashioned a few openings, with Frimpong speeding down the outside and delivering a cut-back to the edge of the area, which Dominik Szoboszlai was unable to reach.

PSG’s attacking menace was always bubbling under, though, and a Kvaratskhelia pot-shot was batted away by Mamardashvili, before Liverpool’s goalkeeper made an outstanding save to deny Doue after the hosts had sprung up the pitch rapidly.

Mamardashvili was then required to make a regulation stop from Ousmane Dembele, who shot tamely, at the end of the first half.

Second half

Dembele spurned another chance to score when he fired Nuno Mendes’ cut-back over the crossbar but, midway through the half, PSG did find their second goal.

A long spell of possession was accelerated by Joao Neves, who played a piercing pass down the inside-right channel, and Kvaratskhelia calmly took control prior to rounding Mamardashvili and slotting home.

It appeared likely to get worse for Liverpool when the referee awarded a penalty for an apparent foul by Ibrahima Konate on Neves, but the decision was overturned following a VAR review.

After Hugo Ekitike had failed to maximise the sight of goal afforded to him by Florian Wirtz’s driving run and pass, Slot made a quadruple substitution, with Isak among the players introduced.

But the next opportunity was PSG’s and Mamardashvili made another smart save from Achraf Hakimi’s hit.

Indeed, it was the hosts who finished the match the stronger, with Dembele rattling the post late on, and the Reds now need another famous Anfield European night next week in order to continue their journey in this season’s Champions League.

Liverpool were eliminated from the Champions League after a 1-0 defeat and penalty shootout loss against Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield.

A frenzied start in which the Reds sought to swarm their opponents was punctured in minute 12 as Ousmane Dembele was able to net a goal that equalised the aggregate score to 1-1.

Both sides carved out multiple chances to tip the balance of the last-16 tie in their favour but they remained locked together throughout the remainder of the 90 and extra-time, forcing penalties.

Visiting goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma denied both Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones from the spot and PSG prevailed 4-1 to advance.

Team

There were three changes by head coach Arne Slot, who brought Diogo Jota, Alexis Mac Allister and Andy Robertson back in to his starting XI.

Cody Gakpo was able to return and take a place among the substitutes.

First half

The noise inside Anfield was ferocious by the time the game kicked off and Liverpool’s intensity – turned around to attack towards the Kop – matched the atmosphere.

Amid the fervour, the Reds were able to produce a marvellous move within four minutes that so nearly produced an opening goal.

Dominik Szoboszlai deftly chested down a forward pass and fed the ball back to Mac Allister, who sweetly surged into the area with a first touch that left his marker frozen.

The Argentinian dragged a low cross to Mohamed Salah at the far post and his finish was on course for the target until Nuno Mendes got a vital touch to deflect it over.

Salah swiftly had another attempt at goal that he curled wide having burst into the position from near halfway, and Virgil van Dijk then saw a downward header halted on its route to goal from a Mac Allister corner delivery.

The flow of play suggested a goal was coming for the hosts, but on 12 minutes PSG pounced to level up the aggregate score.

Dembele dropped deep to take possession and sweep it out right before diverting his run into the area. When the cross aimed back to him arrived, Ibrahima Konate’s effort to touch it away instead left Alisson Becker helpless and allowed the PSG forward to tap in to an exposed net.

As the respective bosses had foreseen, it was a match of immense quality – and chances were frequent.

Donnarumma got gloves on a creeping, low Konate strike from outside the box, Alisson foiled a weak Bradley Barcola finish after he was threaded in by Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and Jota flicked a header too high.

A heavy Dembele touch gave Alisson the chance to smother a dangerous one-v-one from another PSG turnover, and Kvaratskhelia whipped a shot just over the bar as the visitors continued to pose significant threat.

A Dembele curler flicked off Mac Allister and looped just wide of the goalframe before half-time landed with the tie all square.

Second half

Liverpool were on the front foot from the restart and had the ball in the net on 53 minutes – but ultimately to no avail.

After Donnarumma had repelled a Trent Alexander-Arnold blast, the No.66’s low follow-up bounced off the right post, along the line and away.

He squared the next rebound for Szoboszlai to convert from close range. Celebrations were all too brief, though – the flag was raised for a Luis Diaz offside much earlier in the move.

Willian Pacho made a brilliant block to deny Szoboszlai and Donnarumma then clawed out Diaz’s deflected header as the Reds pressed ever more strongly to regain the advantage.

Slot lost Alexander-Arnold to an injury as the game ticked towards its final quarter-hour of normal time, and the Dutchman also deployed Nunez in place of Jota in central attack.

Simultaneously, the tempo of the Reds’ play was beginning to be better managed by PSG, but the hosts went close once more on 79 minutes.

Robertson’s set-piece hoist from deep reached an unmarked Jarell Quansah – the Alexander-Arnold replacement at right-back – and his stooping header across Donnarumma hit the inside of the far post and stayed out.

Kvaratskhelia swiped one into the Kop as the visitors almost snatched the tie before the end of normal time that arrived with still nothing to separate the teams.

Extra-time and penalties

The additional half-hour began with two sights of goal for PSG, with Lucas Beraldo nudging a header a yard wide of the left post just two minutes in.

Fellow substitute Desire Doue then spun inside the box and whistled an effort even more narrowly the wrong side of the same bit of woodwork.

Liverpool ended the first period in the ascendancy and the introduction of Gakpo was followed after the change of ends by Harvey Elliott as Slot tried to find the way through.

Alisson and Dembele recommenced their duel when the Frenchman was teed up to the left of goal and aimed a side-footer that the Reds’ No.1 scooped away.

Konate had to limp off as the clock showed 111 minutes played, Wataru Endo called on to take the defender’s spot alongside Van Dijk at the back.

The aggregate deadlock continued and penalties would have to settle the berth in the quarter-finals.

PSG were on target with each of the four they attempted and Donnarumma’s saves from Nunez and Jones meant it was the Ligue 1 side who moved forward to the next round.

Harvey Elliott’s late winner claimed a 1-0 victory for Liverpool in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie with Paris Saint-Germain at Parc des Princes.

The No.19 came off the bench and scored with his first touch by calmly rolling a first-time finish from Darwin Nunez’s lay-off past Gianluigi Donnarumma in the 87th minute of Wednesday night’s game in the French capital.

The Reds came under intense pressure for prolonged periods but stayed level for the majority of the contest thanks to an outstanding performance from Alisson Becker, which was the highlight of a battling collective display.

Alisson made several fine saves and, on the only occasion he was beaten, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia saw his first-half goal disallowed for offside following a VAR review.

And Elliott would then have the final say as, just 47 seconds after he’d replaced Mohamed Salah, he netted to put Arne Slot’s side in the driving seat for a place in the quarter-finals ahead of next Tuesday’s second leg at Anfield.

Team news

Andy Robertson was restored to Liverpool’s starting XI in the only change from last week’s win over Newcastle United. Cody Gakpo, who sustained a knock in training on Tuesday, was not included in the matchday squad.

First half

Amid a backdrop of vociferous home support, Liverpool began in confident fashion and Luis Diaz’s touch let him down after he’d been found in the penalty area by a clever flick by Diogo Jota.

But the visitors’ grip on the contest loosened as the half wore on, with PSG growing into the game’s dominant force.

The hosts’ first clear sight of goal arrived when Ousmane Dembele skipped away from Andy Robertson and Alexis Mac Allister before squaring to Joao Neves, who scuffed his shot into the ground.

Kvaratskhelia’s disallowed goal – a left-footed curler that found the top corner but had been scored from an offside position – quickly followed, and the Georgian was then denied from distance by Alisson.

PSG were well on top now and the Reds somehow escaped thanks to a combination of brilliance from Alisson – who rushed out to swarm Dembele and best the forward in a one-on-one – and poor finishing on the follow-up from Bradley Barcola.

Alisson produced an even better save soon after, the Brazilian getting down with lightning speed to again thwart Kvaratskhelia, who had tried to beat him at his near post after jinking inside from the left flank.

Liverpool could, though, have snatched the lead on the stroke of half-time. Mac Allister’s corner was glanced on by Diaz and Salah was there at the back post, but the No.11 failed to make contact and the chance was gone.

Second half

The interval came at a good time for Liverpool, who were able to regroup and benefitted from the enforced interruption to PSG’s momentum.

But, yet again, the Reds were indebted to Alisson, who continued to win his personal duel with Kvaratskhelia by tipping his free-kick wide.

The match was becoming more stretched, however, and that suited the away side.

A dangerous counter-attack ended as Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai overplayed instead of shooting and Liverpool then created Salah’s first real one-v-one of the evening, but Nuno Mendes read his intentions to step inside onto his left foot.

Another breakaway came to nothing as Salah’s final pass was uncharacteristically wasteful and Slot turned to his bench, with Curtis Jones and Nunez summoned in place of Diaz and Jota.

Nunez’s first involvement was a tussle with Marquinhos who, with the help of Donnarumma, saw off the No.9’s efforts to reach a searching Trent Alexander-Arnold pass.

PSG substitute Desire Doue was next to be left frustrated by the indomitable Alisson, who clawed his attempt away.

And, as the clock ticked down, two substitutes combined to snatch victory for the Reds, as Nunez showed great composure to roll the ball into the path of Elliott, who did the rest with aplomb.
