Liverpool sell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen in £35m deal

Bayer Leverkusen have signed defender Jarell Quansah from Liverpool in a £35m deal.

The 22-year-old centre-back has joined the German Bundesliga club on a five-year contract.

Quansah was part of the England side that won the European Under-21 Championship by beating Germany in the final on Saturday.

His move is the third deal between the clubs this summer after Liverpool signed midfielder Florian Wirtz and defender Jeremie Frimpong.

Newcastle wanted to sign Quansah last summer, as part of a deal to send winger Anthony Gordon to Liverpool, but the Reds turned down the proposal.

As Quansah is a homegrown player, the fee Liverpool received from Leverkusen will be recorded as 'pure' profit with regards to profit and sustainability rules (PSR).

Quansah came through the Liverpool academy and made 58 appearances for the club, scoring three goals.

He helped the Reds win the League Cup in 2024 and made 13 league appearances last season as Arne Slot's side won the Premier League.

"He has already made an impressive impact in a Liverpool defence dominated by world-class players," said Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes.

"With Jarell, our defence gains significant dynamism, pace and toughness in tackling, and he's another very important building block for the future."

Liverpool are interested in Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi, amid uncertainty over Ibrahima Konate's future.

The France centre-back has 12 months left on his contract at Anfield and is yet to agree an extension, while Joe Gomez's future is also unclear.

Liverpool's England trio help bring home the U21 title

Harvey Elliott scored and Tyler Morton assisted the winner as England lifted a second successive U21 European Championship by beating Germany 3-2 on Saturday.

A member of the Young Lions side that won the title in 2023, Elliott - who was a starter on the night alongside Liverpool teammate Jarell Quansah - delivered his fifth goal of this year’s edition of the tournament after just five minutes of play in Bratislava.

Moving onto a clearance near the edge of the opposition penalty area, the midfielder calmly placed a low finish into the bottom right corner to give his country a lead.

That advantage was doubled midway through the opening half by Omari Hutchinson, but Germany fought back to level through Nelson Weiper and Paul Nebel efforts either side of half-time.

Morton was introduced from the bench by Lee Carsley shortly before the break and, after the Germans had been denied by the woodwork in stoppage time, he was pivotal to England going back in front two minutes into extra-time.

His outstanding, first-time curling cross from the right channel found Jonathan Rowe inside the box to guide home a diving header.

That proved to be the decisive goal, making England champions again, with Germany again hitting the crossbar in added time at the end of 120 minutes.

Harvey Elliott helps England U21 Into The Final

Harvey Elliott continued his outstanding form at the U21 European Championship by scoring twice to ensure England beat the Netherlands 2-1 to reach the final.

The Liverpool midfielder’s third and fourth goals of the tournament decided Wednesday evening’s semi-final in Bratislava, where Jarell Quansah also started. Tyler Morton missed the tie due to a one-match suspension.

Elliott put the Young Lions 1-0 up shortly after the hour with a powerful, right-footed finish after he’d collected Elliot Anderson’s pass.

Noah Ohio quickly equalised for the Netherlands but, having assumed the captain’s armband following James McAtee’s substitution, Elliott produced a moment of magic to win it for the holders four minutes from time.

The Reds’ No. 19 and drove inside and then at the heart of the Dutch defence before finding the bottom corner with unerring precision.

England will now face either France or Germany in the final on Saturday night.

Internationals: Liverpool players in action on Monday

Curtis Jones, Jarell Quansah, Hervey Elliot, James McCaonnel & Trey Nyoni were all involved for their national teams on Monday.

Curtis Jones played the final quarter of an hour in England's 3-0 victory over Latvia in World Cup qualifying taking him to four senior caps.

Meanwhile Quansah, was an unused substitute for Thomas Tuchel's England side at Wembley.

Harvey Elliott played the opening hour of England U21s' friendly against Portugal, were the England side ran out 4-2 winners.

McConnell and Trey Nyoni also featured for an hour in the England Elite League Squad's 2-2 affair with Switzerland.

Quansah extends Anfield contract

Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah has signed a new long-term contract with the club.

Centre-back Quansah, who's been on the Reds' books since he was five years old, enjoyed a breakout season with them last term and is now a regular in their matchday squad under Arne Slot.

The 21-year-old told Liverpool's club media: “I couldn’t be happier at this minute.

“I think the way the new manager has come in, his coaching style has definitely been a massive part of that and I think it is the best club in the world for me to develop at and become a better player.

“I think the players around me, who I’m looking to work hard off and listen to, I think they’re the best in the position at the minute. So, like I said, there is probably no better place I could be.”

Liverpool turn down chance to sign Gordon

Liverpool have turned down a proposal from Newcastle United which involved Anthony Gordon joining the Reds and Jarell Quansah moving in the opposite direction as part of the deal.

The Anfield club did not view the deal as being right for them, even though 23-year-old forward Gordon is a player they admire.

Gordon, who joined the Magpies in a £45m deal in January 2023, is with the England squad at Euro 2024, coming on as a late substitute in Tuesday's goalless draw with Slovenia in his only appearance of the tournament so far.

A player who is also liked by Paris St-Germain, he scored 11 league goals for Newcastle last season and won the club's 2023-24 player of the season award.

Liverpool did not make any offer and they would not consider losing 21-year-old Quansah.

The centre-back became a first-team regular last season and was in the preliminary England squad for Euro 2024, missing out on the final 26-man squad for the tournament.

In addition, Liverpool are well stocked in the forward positions with Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota among their options.

Liverpool centre-back Quansah, 21, and 23-year-old team-mate Jones, who plays in midfield, helped the Reds finish third in the top flight.

The deadline for Southgate confirming his final squad of up to 26 players for the tournament in Germany is midnight on 7 June.

The training squad will join up on Wednesday, 29 May prior to friendlies against Bosnia-Herzegovina on 3 June and Iceland on 7 June.

Southgate’s side will then open their Euro 2024 campaign with a Group C game against Serbia in Gelsenkirchen on 16 June.
