Darwin Nunez seals permanent move to Al-Hilal

Al-Hilal have signed Uruguay striker Darwin Nunez from Liverpool on a three-year contract.

The Saudi Pro League side secured a deal worth 53m euros (£46.3m) for the 26-year-old.

Nunez joined Liverpool in June 2022 from Portuguese side Benfica for an initial fee of £64m.

He scored 40 goals in 143 appearances for the Reds but only started eight Premier League games during their title-winning campaign last season.

A Liverpool statement read: "Everybody at the club would like to thank Darwin for his contributions and wish him and his family all the best for the future."

Nunez has joined the Al-Hilal squad on their pre-season training camp in Germany.

His departure may have an effect on Liverpool's pursuit of Sweden striker Alexander Isak, with Newcastle having turned down an opening offer of £110m.

Nunez scored on his first Liverpool appearance, in a 3-1 win over Manchester City to claim the 2022 Community Shield, and again on his Premier League debut, but he was sent off in his second league game.

A series of minor injuries hindered his chances of holding down a regular starting role during his first season, in which he scored 15 goals from 42 games in all competitions.

His tally increased to 18 from 54 during his second season, but Nunez was used less often after Arne Slot succeeded Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool boss in 2024.

Nunez scored just seven times from 47 appearances last term.

In all, he managed 25 goals from 95 Premier League games for Liverpool, although 46 of those appearances came as a substitute.

Copa America: Nunez features as Uruguay finish third

Darwin Nunez featured in the first half as Uruguay took third place at the Copa America by defeating Canada on penalties overnight.

The Liverpool forward completed the opening 45 minutes in North Carolina, where the third-place play-off ended 2-2 after 90 minutes.

Rodrigo Bentancur and Ismael Kone traded goals early in the game, before Jonathan David put Canada ahead with 10 left to play.

Former Reds striker Luis Suarez equalised in added time, however, and Uruguay went on to win the penalty shootout 4-3.

They therefore finish third in the tournament, with Alexis Mac Allister’s Argentina set to face Luis Diaz’s Colombia in the final.

Copa America: Darwin Nunez’s Uruguay reach semi-finals

Darwin Nunez’s Uruguay claimed a place in the Copa America semi-finals overnight.

Elsewhere in the quarter-finals, Nunez’s Uruguay met Alisson Becker’s Brazil in Las Vegas and both Reds started the contest, which ended 0-0.

Alisson made one excellent save during the subsequent penalty shootout but it was Uruguay who won out, 4-2, to advance.

Uruguay and Colombia will now face each other in the last four, with their meeting set for the early hours of Thursday morning.

Copa America: Nunez helps Uruguay to maintain perfect record

Darwin Nunez was a starter for Uruguay in their 1-0 Copa America victory over the USA that secured top spot in Group C.

The forward played 89 minutes of the contest in Kansas City overnight as Mathias Olivera's second-half effort confirmed a first-placed finish for Marcelo Bielsa's side.

Uruguay progress to the quarter-finals with a 100 per cent record and will face the runners-up of Group D – which contains Alisson Becker's Brazil and Luis Diaz's Colombia – in the early hours on Sunday.

Nunez scores again as Uruguay beat Bolivia

Darwin Nunez scored in his seventh consecutive match for Uruguay as they breezed past Bolivia 5-0 in the Copa America.

The striker netted the second goal of the victory in New Jersey that leaves his nation on the brink of qualification for the quarter-finals.

Nunez dispatched a clinical finish past goalkeeper Guillermo Viscarra inside the penalty area in minute 21 after meeting Maximiliano Araujo's pass.

Liverpool's No.9 was a starter for Marcelo Bielsa's side once again and played 83 minutes of the contest before he was replaced by Luis Suarez.

Uruguay sit top of Group C with a 100 per cent record and would advance to the last eight by avoiding defeat to the USA in the early hours on Tuesday, with even a defeat in that tie likely to see them go through due to superior goal difference.

Nunez scores to help Uruguay defeat Panama

Darwin Nunez scored with a clinical volley to help Uruguay defeat Panama 3-1 in their Copa America opener.

The Liverpool forward played the whole of the Group C tie in Miami overnight, where Uruguay took a first-half lead through Maximiliano Araujo’s excellent curler.

The match remained in the balance until late on but, on 85, Nunez met a dropping ball inside the Panama area with a crisp first-time effort that doubled his country’s advantage.

Matias Vina added to the scoresheet for La Celeste in stoppage time, while Michael Murillo gained a consolation for Panama with his own emphatic strike.

Nunez’s nation are back in action at the tournament in the early hours of Friday morning, when they meet Bolivia in New Jersey.
