Liverpool Women 1:1 Chelsea Match Report

A third goal in three games from Beata Olsson secured Liverpool a battling 1-1 draw against Chelsea in the Barclays Women's Super League on Sunday afternoon.

Both teams struck during the opening half at St Helens Stadium, with Alyssa Thompson opening the scoring for the visitors.

Olsson's effort equalised, though, and ultimately earned Gareth Taylor's side a valuable point.

Chelsea broke the early deadlock with the first attack involving any real danger.

Thompson picked the ball up on the left flank, cut inside to the box and curled an emphatic shot into the top corner of the net.

In response, Sam Kerr saw an attempt from distance well saved, while a Grace Fisk strike dropping the wrong side of the post.

The match then fell into a stop-start rhythm and a battle in midfield by the half-hour mark as possession was exchanged.

Liverpool, however, hauled themselves level in the 33rd minute thanks to a swift break forward that saw Lily Woodham and Olsson combine.

The defender found her teammate on halfway with a quick one-two as the Reds caught the visitors high up the pitch, allowing Olsson to drive through to the area and fire into the back of the net.

With the goal she became the first Liverpool player to score in three consecutive games since Rachel Furness in February 2020.

Ahead of the half-time break, Chelsea saw a huge chance to retake the lead go the wrong side of Faye Kirby's post.

Johanna Rytting Kaneryd's shot was initially blocked in the area, though the rebound fell to Catarina Macario with the goal at her mercy, but her snapshot flew wide of the mark.

To begin the second half, Fisk guided a header over the goal from a corner ball, while Erin Cuthbert saw a deflected shot travel off target.

Chelsea again went close and had the ball past Kirby on the hour mark via substitute Aggie Beever-Jones.

The striker rounded the defence in the box and tapped home, but was denied by a raised offside flag.

Moments later, she lifted a lobbed effort over the onrushing Kirby towards goal, though the ball grazed the far post.

Chelsea were dominating possession but it was Woodham who went closest with the game entering the final exchanges.

The full-back unleashed a shot from the edge of the box and saw the chance bounce just past the woodwork with goalkeeper Livia Peng urgently diving down quickly to reach the effort.

The Blues pushed on in search of a winner, but Ceri Holland almost struck at the other end in added time.

Her darting run down the right flank during a swift break was the last of the action as she cut to the edge of the penalty area, but she had her shot blocked.
