Match Report
Liverpool were defeated 4-1 by PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League at Anfield.
Dominik Szoboszlai quickly equalised after Ivan Perisic had put the visitors ahead with a sixth-minute penalty, but Guus Til restored PSV’s advantage in the early stages of the second half and Couhaib Driouech added a third.
In stoppage time, Driouech scored a fourth for the away side at the end of a counter-attack.
Team
Giorgi Mamardashvili and Hugo Ekitike returned to Liverpool’s starting XI, with Alisson Becker ruled out due to illness and Alexander Isak named on the bench.
First half
PSV struck first and early when Perisic converted from the spot after Virgil van Dijk was penalised for handball.
Liverpool’s reply followed swiftly as Szoboszlai applied the finishing touch to a positive move to score the club’s 500th goal in the European Cup/Champions League.
Alexis Mac Allister found Cody Gakpo, whose low drive was spilled by goalkeeper Matej Kovar and the Reds’ No.8 was in the right place at the right time to convert the rebound.
Then, after PSV’s Yarek Gasiorowski had a goal disallowed for offside, fine last-ditch defending from Anass Salah-Eddine was required to prevent Mohamed Salah from tapping in Gakpo’s cross, before Van Dijk hit the crossbar with a header from the No.11’s corner.
Before the half was out, Ekitike carved out an opportunity for himself only for his toe-poked attempt to be palmed away by Kovar.
Second half
The Reds also began the second period relatively brightly but were undone by a clever Til finish, as PSV’s No.20 sprang in behind the home team’s back line and prodded first-time past Mamardashvili.
Another blow came when Ekitike succumbed to injury and, with 17 minutes remaining, any realistic hope of a Liverpool comeback was ended by Driouech's first of the evening.
And a fourth for PSV followed in added time when Driouech finished off a breakaway.
