Premier League 25/26 Matchday 16 - Liverpool 2:0 Brighton & Hove Albion Match Report

Match Report

Two goals from Hugo Ekitike secured Liverpool a 2-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion at Anfield in the Premier League.

The striker grabbed his first in the opening minute of Saturday's affair and then doubled the Reds' lead with a header in the second half.

The brace and clean sheet saw Arne Slot's men stretch their unbeaten run to five matches in all competitions.

Team

Milos Kerkez and Florian Wirtz were the two alterations to the line-up Liverpool deployed at Internazionale in midweek.

Curtis Jones took his appearance total for the club to 200, while Virgil van Dijk made his 250th outing for the Reds in the Premier League.

First half

The opener officially clocked in at 46 seconds after the referee blew his whistle to start proceedings.

A Yankuba Minteh clearance floated across his own penalty area and was eventually nodded forward towards Ekitike by Joe Gomez.

The Frenchman took a touch and then smashed a finish past Bart Verbruggen for his ninth goal of the season.

Brighton came close to levelling with a pair of opportunities in quick succession, Mintah playing a central role in both.

The winger was fractionally just wide with an attempted curler into the far corner before slipping a pass to send Diego Gomez through on goal, with the resulting shot kept out by the feet of Alisson Becker.

Ekitike dragged efforts off target ahead of the Reds losing Gomez to injury midway through the half.

Mohamed Salah was his replacement, with Dominik Szoboszlai dropping into right-back, and involved right away.

He was played in by Szoboszlai and shifted the ball on to Alexis Mac Allister, who looked to do the same for Ekitike before Verbruggen came out to intercept.

Liverpool's final chances of the period saw them threaten with an Ekitike side-foot on the back of a counter-attack and Ryan Gravenberch firing straight at the goalkeeper after some neat footwork.

Second half

Ekitike nearly had his second not long after the break, driving across the pitch but unable to hit the target with the eventual strike.

A minute later at the other end, Gomez will have thought he should have drawn the visitors level.

He was found at the back post by Mats Wieffer's low cross, though could only manage to find the side-netting with the close-range finish.

Another warning sign followed as Brajan Gruda went just wide with a hit from inside the penalty area.

The Reds heeded those close calls to establish a healthy cushion on the hour mark.

Salah earned the corner that led to the second, taking aim and forcing Verbruggen to divert the strike behind.

His delivery of the set-piece was then sent towards the back stick and met by the leap of Ekitike.

As a result of that assist, Salah claimed the Premier League record for goal involvements for a single club.

Kaoru Mitoma, Ferdi Kadioglu and Yasin Ayari threatened to halve the deficit, although Salah could have supplied a third goal for his team but fired over from Federico Chiesa's pass off a breakaway.

Champions League 25/26 Matchday 6 - Inter Milan 0:1 Liverpool Match Report

Match Report

Dominik Szoboszlai's late penalty clinched Liverpool a 1-0 victory over Internazionale in the Champions League on Tuesday evening.

The midfielder emphatically dispatched the kick in the 88th minute of the league-phase clash to give the Reds a merited win at San Siro.

Arne Slot's side thereby moved onto 12 points from six games in the competition this term, with two further games to come in January.

Team

Slot made four changes to his starting XI in Milan, including Alexander Isak restored in attack.

First half

There was a big-occasion atmosphere as the two sides emerged onto the turf at one of European football's iconic venues.

Play was largely shadowboxing in the early stages, though, with the exchanges interrupted by an injury that forced off Hakan Calhanoglu and a hefty Lautaro Martinez tackle that left Andy Robertson requiring treatment.

Eighteen minutes were on the clock when a goalkeeper was first worked, Yann Sommer in the Inter net shuffling away efforts by Curtis Jones and then Ryan Gravenberch.

Martinez injected urgency to the Inter attack with a dart forward from which he just failed to complete a one-two with Marcus Thuram that likely would have opened up a shooting chance. Gravenberch produced a timely interception inside the Liverpool box.

Next, Hugo Ekitike was foiled at the near post by Sommer having raced onto a knock over the top and jinked around Francesco Acerbi.

The Reds had the ball in the net on 32 minutes, though ultimately to no avail.

Ekitike and Virgil van Dijk challenged at a corner and the ball fell to Ibrahima Konate to nod over the line despite an attempted clearance from Martinez.

A VAR check ensued and after the referee reviewed the incident, he judged a handball had occurred before Konate converted.

Nicolo Barella scooped a free-kick just wide at the other end and, in the penultimate of seven added minutes, the hosts went closest.

From a left-wing cross into the middle, Martinez flicked a downward header that Alisson Becker reacted well to repel.

Second half

Isak hooked off target in the fledgling moments of the second half having snuffed out Sommer's attempt to play from the back.

The Reds were enjoying an increased amount of possession and a hacked clearance was needed in front of the Inter goal when a move led to Robertson serving in a cross.

Immediately at the other end, Van Dijk had to block out a Martinez opportunity as the home team countered quickly.

Conor Bradley crafted a chance within seconds of his introduction from the bench alongside Florian Wirtz midway through the half.

The Northern Irishman chested down a long pass and picked out Ekitike inside the area, but the No.22's first-time finish was blocked by Manuel Akanji.

The same pair combined in reverse order to get Bradley on goal in the 80th minute, only for Sommer to stop his effort from a narrowing angle.

Liverpool's travelling supporters high in the stands of San Siro sensed a breakthrough was near - and right at the end, they could celebrate one.

Another VAR check judged Wirtz had been pulled back inside the area by Alessandro Bastoni, and up stepped Szoboszlai to thump the penalty past Sommer.

Arsenal 2:1 Liverpool Women Match Report

Liverpool suffered a late 2-1 defeat by Arsenal in the Barclays Women's Super League on Saturday afternoon.

Gareth Taylor's side fell behind to a long-range Olivia Smith effort in the first half at Emirates Stadium.

Beata Olsson levelled on the half-hour and made history as the first player to score in as many as four of her first five starts in the WSL.

But the Reds were denied any points to bring home from the capital when Stina Blackstenius scored in the closing moments.

Arsenal made a sprightly start on home soil, with former Reds forward Smith a threat moving in off the left flank.

Faye Kirby in the Liverpool goal made a couple of rudimentary saves from headers by Lotte Wubben-Moy and Mariona Caldentey.

The visitors looked like they were going to take the lead in immediate response.

A knock forward sent Olsson into space in behind and she beat the emerging goalkeeper to touch the ball around her. But the Swede lost her balance and could not convert into the exposed net.

Soon after at the other end, the woodwork spared the Reds as Caldentey's cross to the back stick was met by Wubben-Moy yards out. Her header clipped the post.

It was temporary respite, however.

On 16 minutes, Smith picked up the ball on her wing and carried it through to the middle before cracking a low shot from around 25 yards that nestled into the left corner.

The Canadian later saw a curler from closer range blocked by Lucy Parry as Arsenal sought to press home their advantage.

Instead, though, it was Liverpool who scored next.

An excellently worked equaliser it was, too. Turning over the ball in the opposition half, slick passes from Kirsty Maclean and Mia Enderby set up Olsson, who rolled a clinical finish beyond Anneke Borbe off her left foot.

The Gunners reasserted some control when the second half got under way - and the Reds needed their goalkeeper again.

Alessia Russo had already flashed an attempt wide after working good space for herself with neat footwork inside the box.

The same player was then denied by the hands of Kirby having been found by Taylor Hinds' low cross into a similar area.

Their one-on-one duel continued when Russo was picked out from a deep corner and prodded it at goal. Once more, Kirby was well placed to thwart.

As Liverpool dug in and defended stoutly, Arsenal were being frustrated.

Substitute Caitlin Foord thrashed her strike too high after Kirby parried out a firmly hit cross from Smith down the right-hand side.

Katie McCabe went close, meanwhile, with a first-time volley from a dropping ball that whistled over the bar.

Gemma Evans made a miraculous recovery to make amends for her own error nine minutes from the end.

Blackstenius had seized upon her loose pass back and rounded Kirby to set up a tap-in. But Evans raced back and slid in to send the final finish wide.

The Reds were undone on 87 minutes, though.

A knock over the top was brought down by Blackstenius and she turned on the ball to crash a clinical winner into the top right corner.

Liverpool: Kirby, Parry (Lundgaard, 67), Silcock (Bernabe, 71), Clark, Evans, Woodham, Nagano, Maclean (Kiernan, 90+2), Enderby, Kapocs, Olsson.
