Liverpool FC 1-3 Sevilla - Europa League Final 18th May 2016

Wednesday 18th May 2016, Europa League, Final, St Jacob-Park, Basel
Liverpool Kick Off - 20:45pm Sevilla

1:3

Half Time 1:1

Match Report

Liverpool suffered heartbreak in the Europa League final on Wednesday night as they were beaten 3-1 by Sevilla in Basel.

The Reds took the lead during an impressive first-half showing courtesy of an outstanding Daniel Sturridge strike.

However, the Spaniard’s fought back after the break, scoring three times at St. Jakob-Park to seal victory and secure the trophy for the third successive season.

The key points…

Sturridge opened scoring on 35 minutes with wonderful outside-of-boot finish.

Lovren header chalked off moments later for offside decision.

Gameiro equalised 17 seconds after break before Coke put Sevilla ahead midway through second half.

Coke grabbed their third, pouncing on a loose ball inside the box to complete the scoring.

The team news…

Liverpool elected to select the same team that had dispatched Villarreal in the second leg of the semi-final at Anfield. That meant starts for the likes of Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Sturridge as Klopp made 11 changes to the side that started against West Bromwich Albion on Sunday.

Elsewhere, Jordan Henderson and Divock Origi were named on the bench after returning to fitness.

The first half…

After the formalities of the contest’s opening ceremony had concluded, the game got underway with the Liverpool support inside St. Jakob-Park making all the noise; however, it was Sevilla who made the more imposing start to proceedings.

That said, it was Emre Can who had the game’s first attempt on goal, striking first time from 20 yards and forcing David Soria into a flying save.

Then, two minutes later, a Sturridge header back across goal from a deep Nathaniel Clyne centre evaded the goalkeeper, but was hooked off the line by Daniel Carrico.

Sturridge was the recipient of the next opportunity fashioned by Liverpool, too. This time, Adam Lallana’s reverse pass allowed the striker to find space inside the area, but from a tight angle his effort was smothered by the sprawling Soria.

In what was developing into a finely-posed encounter, Sevilla’s first real chance didn’t arrive until just after the half-hour when Gameiro’s ambitious overhead kick in a crowded box gave cause for momentary worry before bouncing wide.

But finally, the moment Liverpool had been threatening, arrived on 35 minutes as Sturridge opened the scoring with a moment of sublime class.

Collecting Philippe Coutinho’s pass just inside the area following a counter-attack, the forward intelligently used Mariano Ferreira’s body to shield the vision of Soria before arching an effort into the corner with the outside of his left boot.

The travelling support erupted in delight – and they thought it had got even better soon after when Lovren sent a header crashing into the back of the net from 12 yards at a corner, but a flag was raised for offside.

The Reds were in the ascendancy, though, and Sturridge was millimetres away from turning another Clyne cross over the line from yards out before the whistle sounded for the interval.

The second half…

Liverpool’s half-time joy lasted just 17 seconds after the re-start when Sevilla drew level. Ferreira scampered down the right, evaded Alberto Moreno and laid the ball off for Gameiro in the centre to tap in an equaliser.

The French forward found himself bearing down on Simon Mignolet again just moments later, but he was foiled by a sensational last-ditch challenge from Kolo Toure as he went to pull the trigger.

Gameiro was then left clutching his head in his hands when Steven N’Zonzi’s flick from a long throw-in found him completely unmarked inside the six-yard box; however, his swipe at a volley was deflected over the crossbar by the legs of Mignolet.

Nevertheless, Liverpool’s fortune evaded them on 63 minutes as the La Liga side went in front as Coke met Vitolo’s attempt to skip beyond two Reds defenders and clipped first-time into the bottom corner from the edge of the area.

Klopp’s response saw Origi introduced for Firmino with 22 minutes left on the clock, but Sevilla extended their lead soon after when Coke capitalised on some good fortune to smash beyond Mignolet from close range.

And despite their efforts, on this occasion there was to be no Liverpool fightback as the trophy returned to Spain.

Pre-Season Friendly - Liverpool v Sevilla

Matchday Report

Liverpool claimed a 4-1 win over Sevilla in the first of their back-to-back home friendlies on Sunday afternoon.

A fabulous Diogo Jota volley gave the Reds a breakthrough with half an hour played at Anfield, before Luis Diaz netted twice in quick succession before the interval.

Peque Fernandez got one back for the Spaniards but substitute Trey Nyoni immediately restored a three-goal lead, with a behind-closed-doors contest against another La Liga side, Las Palmas, following.

Liverpool emerged into blazing sunshine for their maiden Anfield appearance of both the new season and the tenure of head coach Arne Slot.

vFive Reds were playing for the first time in the pre-season, with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alisson Becker, Diaz, Alexis Mac Allister and Virgil van Dijk back in the XI.

Slot’s men almost carved out a third-minute chance when Mohamed Salah’s prodded pass in behind for the scampering Diaz was cleared at the last by Sevilla goalkeeper Orjan Nyland.

The visitors should have taken the lead just before the quarter-hour mark.

Stanis Idumbo intercepted Jarell Quansah’s pass as the Liverpool man tried to play out from around his area, and was clean through one-on-one. But Idumbo got the strike all wrong and skied the ball into the Kop.

Diaz was off target high and to the right with a blast from around 25 yards, before Salah was closer with a curler across the face of goal and past the post after a trademark shimmy inside from the flank.

But Liverpool would soon deliver a clinical spell that had them three goals ahead by half-time.

The opener was spectacular. After a cleared Reds corner was lofted back into the Sevilla penalty box, Jota met the ball with a sublime, first-time volley off his left foot that soared into the top right of the net.

They could have doubled their lead before they actually did, but Tanguy Nianzou recovered well to intercept when Salah broke free, drew Nyland and tried to square for Jota.

But with 37 on the clock, Jota battled strongly and spread play out to the left wing, from where Diaz beat his marker down the inside and powered an effort high into the goal.

And it got even better for Slot’s side a minute before the break. Again they cut through, this time Dominik Szoboszlai the player sent bounding clear. The No.8 unselfishly squared for Diaz to convert from close range.

There was a lively start to the second half at both ends.

Ryan Gravenberch was crowded out at the crucial moment after some fine footwork inside the box at one end, while Djibril Sow sent a low hit too central to concern Alisson at the other.

As we reached the hour mark, Van Dijk met a Kostas Tsimikas corner from the right with a header that the captain got on target but without enough power to threaten a fourth.

The next goal in fact came from Sevilla. Chidera Ejuke’s headway along the left needed the attentions of two and the ball eventually skewed to Peque, who from just inside the area arced a shot in off the right post.

Liverpool’s response was immediate, and equally impressive.

The away team could only partially clear a loft into the box from Tsimikas, and the loose ball was sent whistling into the bottom corner from Nyoni’s sliced strike.

Salah nearly added his name to the scoresheet in the closing moments, though Nyland reacted smartly to tip his low curler around the post.

Liverpool to finish pre-season against Sevilla at Anfield

Liverpool will finish their pre-season programme with a match against La Liga side Sevilla at Anfield on Sunday August 11, kick-off 3pm.

It will be Arne Slot’s first game at Anfield, and the Reds’ fourth pre-season fixture in preparation for the 2024-25 season, which begins with a trip to newly promoted Ipswich Town on Saturday August 17.

The clubs have met twice in the Champions League in recent years, both ending in draws, and previously contested the Europa League final in 2016.

The Anfield match will follow the three pre-season games in the United States, with the first one against Real Betis at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh on Friday July 26, kick-off 7.30pm EST.

During the Reds’ return to the USA for the first time since 2019, the club and its official charity LFC Foundation will be involved in a number of grassroots and charitable events.

Slot’s men will also face Premier League rivals Arsenal and Manchester United.

The Arsenal game takes place on July 31 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia and will be followed by an encounter with United at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, South Carolina on August 3.
