Match Report
Liverpool were 1-0 winners over Real Madrid in Tuesday night's Champions League clash at Anfield.
Just as he did 12 months ago, Alexis Mac Allister opened the scoring against the Spaniards in the second half, here with a fine header.
On this occasion, a single goal was enough for Arne Slot's men to defeat Real, making it nine points from four games in the league phase.
Team
Slot opted for one change to his starting XI from last weekend, and it brought Florian Wirtz into the side.
The summer signing replaced Cody Gakpo and was deployed to the left of Liverpool's front three.
First half
The teams emerged to a cauldron of noise inside Anfield to herald the 13th meeting of two of the continent's most-storied clubs.
The frantic early exchanges, with the Reds turned to attack towards the Kop, did not lead to a chance until minute 10.
That came from Wirtz harrying Dean Huijsen off the ball on the byline. Possession was fed back to Dominik Szoboszlai and then Mac Allister, whose first-time strike was sliced off target.
Kylian Mbappe skied a finish at the other end as Real responded with a slick counter-attack involving Vinicius Jr. and Jude Bellingham.
That effort preceded a spell of control from the visitors, but they needed their goalkeeper just prior to the half-hour.
A tackle on the flank sent a loose ball to Wirtz in a fortuitous amount of space on the right and he rolled a pass into the middle for an unmarked Szoboszlai.
However, Thibaut Courtois sprung from his net and spread his body to get a block on the Liverpool No.8's finish.
A lengthy VAR check followed an incident in which a Szoboszlai drive was blocked at the edge of the box by Aurelien Tchouameni.
Having initially awarded the Reds a free-kick, the referee was sent to the monitor to review. He ultimately decided there had been no handball.
Slot's men were now firmly in the ascendancy and a low Szoboszlai shot was plucked in by Courtois next.
The Hungarian and Belgian continued their one-on-one battle when the former thumped another effort that the latter gloved away.
Giorgi Mamardashvili delivered when called upon, too, blocking Bellingham from close range after he had shimmied into the area.
Courtois got strong hands on a Mac Allister blast as the half concluded goalless.
Second half
The visiting stopper was at it again within minutes of the restart, denying both Virgil van Dijk and Hugo Ekitike from headers.
His latest duel with Szoboszlai was a save from a free-kick strike, but the dam was about to yield.
Szoboszlai arced in a set-piece from the right channel and Mac Allister met it with a crisp header that, this time, evaded Courtois' clutches.
Mbappe side-footed just wide of the right post when picked out by Vinicius after his dart into space down the left-hand side.
It had become a more cat-and-mouse affair by this stage, with Liverpool keeping Real largely at arm's length.
Courtois, meanwhile, thwarted substitute Cody Gakpo with a reaction stop and Mohamed Salah's rebound was blocked at the last.
But one proved enough for the Reds to clinch back-to-back victories and clean sheets.

Champions League Matchday 5 - Liverpool 2:0 Real Madrid Match Report
Liverpool maintained their flawless record in this season’s Champions League by beating Real Madrid 2-0 at Anfield.
An action-packed second half that featured goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo also included missed penalties by Kylian Mbappe – whose effort was saved by Caoimhin Kelleher soon after Mac Allister’s opener – and Mohamed Salah.
The Reds produced yet another performance of class and authority to deservedly defeat the holders and reel off a fifth consecutive victory in the competition’s league phase.
Team news
Mac Allister and Luis Diaz were restored to Liverpool’s starting line-up in place of Dominik Szoboszlai and Gakpo as Slot made two changes from Sunday’s win at Southampton.
First half
A first half high on quality though low on clear-cut chances for either team nearly began in ideal fashion for the Reds, but Raul Asencio avoided scoring an own goal by hacking the ball off the goalline after Darwin Nunez had forced Thibaut Courtois into a save.
Diaz scuffed an attempt to beat Courtois at his near post and then Real settled, with Luka Modric pulling the strings in midfield.
The visitors’ increased presence in the contest did not translate to opportunities to trouble Kelleher, however, and they were again indebted to Courtois as he advanced to smother Nunez’s effort at source.
As the game ebbed and flowed, the decibel level inside Anfield was cranked up considerably when Conor Bradley emphatically halted a Real counter-attack with a thumping tackle that dispossessed Mbappe.
Liverpool’s best spell of the half followed, with Nunez and Diaz each having headed attempts on goal, but it remained deadlocked at the break.
Second half
The Reds’ intent was clear from the first whistle of the second period and Curtis Jones saw a shot deflect wide before Courtois parried away Bradley’s downward header from close range.
The long-awaited opener would soon follow, though, thanks to Mac Allister. The No.10 played a neat one-two with Bradley and duly gave Courtois insufficient time to react by rapidly dispatching a precise finish into the far bottom corner.
Kelleher’s latest penalty heroics were required when, against the run of play, Andy Robertson was adjudged to have tripped Lucas Vazquez, handing Mbappe the chance to equalise on the hour.
But the Liverpool goalkeeper read his intentions, springing to his left to palm the kick away to deafening approval from the home support.
An increasingly absorbing match would provide yet more drama soon after as Salah befuddled Ferland Mendy until the defender brought him down inside the area. Salah sent Courtois the wrong way from the spot, but his kick kissed the outside of the post and ended up in the Kop.
Ultimately that would matter little, however, as, Liverpool quickly doubled their lead anyway.
A quick corner between Jones and Robertson afforded the latter the room to deliver an inswinging cross and there was Gakpo, rising high to plant his header into the corner and rubber-stamp yet another Champions League victory.

Liverpool v Real Madrid - Match Preview
Liverpool welcome Real Madrid to Anfield for a huge heavyweight clash in the Champions League group stages.
It has been an excellent start to life as Liverpool manager for Arne Slot, both domestically and in Europe. The Reds lead the Premier League by eight points and have enjoyed a perfect start to the Champions League. They are the only side in the tournament to have picked up maximum points, meaning another victory would leave them in a very strong position to advance to the knockout stages.
Standing in their way is Real Madrid, who have had an underwhelming season so far. However, they trail their rivals Barcelona by just four points with a game in hand, though have work to do in Europe. After four games, Real sit in 18th with just six points. They have already suffered two defeats and cannot afford fall to another if they want to remain in contention for the top eight. As it stands, they are in a play-off spot.
Despite the signing of Kylian Mbappe in the summer, Carlo Ancelotti’s side have not been as dominant as expected. The Frenchman has scored eight goals across the two competitions, but faces the second-toughest defence in the tournament. Liverpool have conceded just one goal in Europe, form they have also displayed in the league. Their eight goals allowed is by far the best in the Premier League.
However, the visitors have more than enough talent to trouble their opponents. Jude Bellingham is always a threat, and he has now scored in two consecutive games.
At the other end, Liverpool are just as strong. Mo Salah has delivered another fantastic campaign with ten league goals and another in Europe. Luis Diaz has also contributed eight across both competitions. They should be confident in scoring against a Real Madrid defence who have not yet kept a clean sheet in the Champions League.
This will be the 12th meeting between these two European giants, but it is Real Madrid who possess the superior record. Liverpool have won three fixtures though have not recorded victory since 2009. They are currently amidst an eight-game winless streak against their opponents which includes seven losses. The most recent game was in March 2023 when the pair faced off in the Champions League Round of 16. The Spaniards were 1-0 winners with Karim Benzema on target to advance 6-2 on aggregate.

Liverpool move fast to secure star as the reds plan mega offer to Real Madrid target
Liverpool are ready to put immediate plans in place to tie down Trent Alexander-Arnold to a new contract at Anfield, with Richard Hughes set to offer a mega-money new deal to the player and despite a warning from a former star that the player would find a transfer to Real Madrid ‘impossible to resist’.
Alexander-Arnold is the Liverpool vice-captain and a modern-day icon at Anfield, having come through their academy to become one of their best and most important stars. Regarded as one of the most creative full-backs in the modern game, the 25-year-old has a hugely-impressive 79 assists and 19 goals from 310 appearances for the Reds – unreal numbers for a full-back.
Although given licence to roam forwards by previous boss Jurgen Klopp, helping to aid his impressive numbers, Alexander-Arnold has also shown himself capable of playing as an out-and-out midfielder when featuring for the England team; or at least that was how Gareth Southgate used the West Derby born star over this summer’s European Championships.
Now with under a year left on his Anfield deal, Liverpool face a critical summer of talks to try and persuade Alexander-Arnold – as well as Mo Salah and Virgil van Dijk – to extend their stays on Merseyside for the forseeable future.
With the trios deals all running down, the Reds would have no shortage of suitors for the their star men if they were either put up for sale this summer or the players allowed their contracts run down.
Indeed, reports from Spain of late have warned Liverpool that Real Madrid are lurking with serious intent as far as Alexander-Arnold is concerned with the player very much on their radar for a summer 2025 swoop.
