Liverpool 1:0 Real Betis

Pre-Season Friendly - Liverpool v Real Betis

Matchday Report

Liverpool kicked off their pre-season tour of the USA with a 1-0 win against Real Betis in Pittsburgh on Friday.

A well-taken finish from Dominik Szoboszlai after 34 minutes ensured Arne Slot’s first game as Reds head coach in front of supporters ended in victory.

In sweltering conditions at Acrisure Stadium, Slot’s side dominated possession from the outset and were sharp with their pressing when without the ball.

Wataru Endo and Mohamed Salah were off target early on with curling efforts from the edge of the area.

Betis threatened Caoimhin Kelleher’s goal for the first time in minute 20 when Juanmi fired an effort into the side-netting. They had a promising opportunity not long after but couldn’t capitalise on a turnover as Nabil Fekir spun and shot well over at the conclusion of the counter.

The breakthrough then came at the other end, courtesy of a Liverpool attack down the right.

Salah stood up Romain Perraud to play a pass into the space behind the Betis left-back, from where Szoboszlai stroked a finish past his former teammate Adrian.

Adrian stopped the Reds from doubling their lead moments later by thwarting a charging Conor Bradley, with Salah again the creator.

Trey Nyoni, who replaced Curtis Jones after half an hour, did well to fashion a chance early in the second half, though Rui Silva saved easily from Fabio Carvalho’s tame effort.

After Harvey Elliott headed wide from a Kostas Tsimikas cross, Slot opted to introduce eight players to the game from the bench – and two were involved when the Reds nearly made it 2-0 in the 67th minute.

Harvey Blair ran through and protested he had been brought down by the ’keeper inside the box. Kaide Gordon, however, pounced on the loose ball but ended up dragging wide.

Vitezslav Jaros replaced Kelleher at the break and it was his save towards the end to deny Iker Losada from close range that confirmed the Reds would make a winning start to their trip to the States.

Arne Slot names 28 man pre-season squad

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has named a 28-player squad for the start of the club's pre-season tour of the United States, with a friendly against Real Betis in Pittsburgh scheduled for Friday.

The Reds had as many as 14 players on international duty at Euro 2024 and the Copa America, with most reaching the knockout stages of those competitions. So far, only Andrew Robertson, Dominik Szoboszlai and Vitezslav Jaros have reported back due to group stage exits.

With the addition of Robertson, the group Slot flew with is pretty much the same as that which was narrowly beaten by Preston North End in a behind closed doors friendly last week. The Championship side scored their solitary goal in the second half, by which time first-teamers like Mohamed Salah, Curtis Jones, Jarell Quansah, Harvey Elliott and Szoboszlai had gone off.

Goalkeepers Caoimhin Kelleher and Marcelo Pitaluga have also joined the squad since then.

It is hoped that Alisson and Diogo Jota, whose countries were knocked out of their respective tournaments at the quarter-final stage, will link up with the Reds while still on tour. It remains to be seen when those who reached later rounds – including Trent Alexander-Arnold with England and Alexis Mac Allister with Argentina in finals on 14 July – will be available.

Having also faced Arsenal on 31 July, Liverpool's final tour game is against Manchester United on 3 August, after which point they will fly home for one final warm-up against Sevilla on 11 August.

Liverpool pre-season tour squad – 2024/25

Goalkeepers: Caoimhin Kelleher, Vitezslav Jaros, Harvey Davies, Marcelo Pitaluga

Defenders: Conor Bradley, Jarell Quansah, Kostas Tsimikas, Andrew Robertson, Nat Phillips, Sepp van den Berg, Amara Nallo, Luke Chambers, Owen Beck, Luca Stephenson

Midfielders: Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo, Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott, Tyler Morton, Stefan Bajcetic, James McConnell, Trey Nyoni

Forwards: Mohamed Salah, Fabio Carvalho, Ben Doak, Kaide Gordon, Lewis Koumas, Harvey Blair.

Liverpool move fast to secure star as the reds plan mega offer to Real Madrid target

Liverpool are ready to put immediate plans in place to tie down Trent Alexander-Arnold to a new contract at Anfield, with Richard Hughes set to offer a mega-money new deal to the player and despite a warning from a former star that the player would find a transfer to Real Madrid ‘impossible to resist’.

Alexander-Arnold is the Liverpool vice-captain and a modern-day icon at Anfield, having come through their academy to become one of their best and most important stars. Regarded as one of the most creative full-backs in the modern game, the 25-year-old has a hugely-impressive 79 assists and 19 goals from 310 appearances for the Reds – unreal numbers for a full-back.

Although given licence to roam forwards by previous boss Jurgen Klopp, helping to aid his impressive numbers, Alexander-Arnold has also shown himself capable of playing as an out-and-out midfielder when featuring for the England team; or at least that was how Gareth Southgate used the West Derby born star over this summer’s European Championships.

Now with under a year left on his Anfield deal, Liverpool face a critical summer of talks to try and persuade Alexander-Arnold – as well as Mo Salah and Virgil van Dijk – to extend their stays on Merseyside for the forseeable future.

With the trios deals all running down, the Reds would have no shortage of suitors for the their star men if they were either put up for sale this summer or the players allowed their contracts run down.

Indeed, reports from Spain of late have warned Liverpool that Real Madrid are lurking with serious intent as far as Alexander-Arnold is concerned with the player very much on their radar for a summer 2025 swoop.

The Pilgrims plot Danns loan move

Plymouth Argyle boss Wayne Rooney is ready to raid old rivals Liverpool to try and take teenage sensation Jayden Danns on loan, TEAMtalk can exclusively reveal.

Rooney is keen to bolster his side’s attacking options ahead of the new season and he is a big admirer of Liverpool hot-shot Danns.

The 18-year-old burst onto the scene at Liverpool last season, helping the Reds win the Carabao Cup final against Chelsea at Wembley. He also scored his first two goals in an FA Cup fifth-round victory over Southampton.

Liverpool have high hopes for Danns, who is the son of former Bolton midfielder Neil, and he signed a new long-term deal at Anfield last March.

Danns is likely to be well down the pecking order in Arne Slot’s plans next season due to the array of attacking options available to the Dutchman.

Ex-Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was a huge admirer of the teenager and he looks set to have a big future ahead of him with the Merseyside giants.

Danns spent much of last season training in and around the first team, while he also scored three goals and made two assists in eight matches for the Reds’ under-21s side.

Liverpool may feel Danns might benefit from a first loan move away from Anfield to continue his development with regular first-team football and Rooney and Plymouth are at the front of the queue if they decide to loan him out.

Liverpool 'readying' Eze transfer move as stance on Crystal Palace star emerges.

Liverpool have reportedly registered their interest in signing Crystal Palace midfielder Eberechi Eze this summer, though are set to face competition from other Premier League clubs.

Palace have already parted ways with one star player during the transfer window, having sold Michael Olise to Bayern Munich, and now face a battle to keep hold of another one of their shrewd EFL purchases.

Eze is understood to be on the radar of various, one of which is claimed to be Liverpool. A latest report by Football Insider has stated Arne Slot's side have "registered interest" in the 26-year-old, with Tottenham Hotspur also following suit.

Liverpool 0:1 Preston North End - Pre-Season Friendly

Pre-Season Friendly - Liverpool v Preston North End

Matchday Detail

Liverpool were edged out 1-0 by Preston North End in a behind-closed-doors pre-season friendly at the AXA Training Centre on Friday.

The match was the first of any kind for the senior team since new head coach Arne Slot was appointed earlier this summer, and played amid sunshine in Kirkby.

The Reds – for whom 25 players got minutes – fashioned several promising chances, particularly during the first half, but it was the visitors who found the only goal, Robbie Brady scoring with an excellent effort from distance.

The game was just three minutes old when the home side released Ben Doak into space via the left channel. The forward lined up a strike as he moved in on the angle but was blocked out by Brad Potts at the last.

From their next chance, Mohamed Salah narrowly cleared the crossbar with a good volley from inside the area after Preston had only partially cleared Kostas Tsimikas’ cross on an overlap down the left.

Both Harvey Elliott and Conor Bradley saw edge-of-the-box efforts deflected just wide to the right, and from the latter restart, Doak flicked a header off target when picked out free at the far post.

Liverpool were enjoying the vast majority of the ball and they carved out another strong chance with 26 on the clock. A dinked ball into the box was invitingly sent across the face of goal by Salah for Elliott, whose attempt to nudge in was denied as Preston goalkeeper Freddie Woodman reacted quickly to get palms on it.

And then against the run of play, just shy of the half-hour mark, the visitors found the net instead. Brady stole possession as the Reds tried to play out from the back and quickly clipped a clinical long-ranger that flew over Vitezslav Jaros and went in off the upright.

Slot deployed 10 changes to the Liverpool team at the outset of the second half, in which the opening 15 minutes passed by without any true goalmouth action at either end.

Luke Chambers swerved a 25-yarder too high as the contest moved towards its final quarter, and Lewis Koumas got too much on a shot soon after, having been teed up for the strike by Tyler Morton’s forward pass.

Slot’s men continued to try to turn their greater share of the ball into an equaliser; only an important block denied Trey Nyoni when he shimmied into the area and blasted at goal, before a low volley from Kaide Gordon was caught by the ’keeper.

But Preston held firm to preserve their one-goal advantage and the Reds now turn focus towards their three-match tour of the USA, which begins on Tuesday.

Liverpool appoint Heitinga as assistant coach

John Heitinga has been appointed to Liverpool’s backroom staff in the position of assistant coach.

The 40-year-old becomes the latest addition to Arne Slot’s staff ahead of the start of 2024-25.

Heitinga made his name as a centre-back during his playing days, winning 87 caps for the Netherlands and representing Ajax, Atletico Madrid, Everton, Fulham and Hertha BSC before hanging up his boots in 2016.

He then moved into coaching, working with various youth teams within the Ajax set-up, before taking charge of the Amsterdam club’s senior side between January and June 2023.

Most recently, Heitinga worked as first-team assistant coach at West Ham United last season.

He now joins Slot’s team in assisting Liverpool’s preparations for the forthcoming campaign.

Adam Lewis to play in League Two after Liverpool exit

Adam Lewis is staying in League Two after leaving Liverpool.

The left-back has signed a one-year deal for Morecambe and was one of 15 players announced in one fell swoop by Derek Adams’ side.

The Shrimps were placed under a registration embargo in March because of an unpaid VAT bill but that has been lifted.

Lewis, 24, was released by the Reds this summer after spending the last two campaigns on loan with the Exiles.

He made 28 appearances in 2022/23 and featured 30 times last season, with his time in Newport ended when he was sent off against Accrington with two games left to play.

The defender, whose time at Rodney Parade was hindered by injury, had expressed interest in signing a permanent deal with County and former boss Graham Coughlan was keen, but instead he will play for the Shrimps.

Lewis will go up against the Exiles in Morecambe on August 31 and then return to Rodney Parade on January 4.

Copa America: Mac Allister victorious in final after Argentina beat Colombia

Alexis Mac Allister and Argentina lifted the Copa America after overcoming Luis Diaz's Colombia.

Mac Allister bolstered his medal collection overnight by helping La Albiceleste register a 1-0 victory after extra-time in the final.

Both Liverpool players were starters for their countries as Lautaro Martinez's 112th-minute goal eventually decided the showpiece at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

Mac Allister featured for 97 minutes in what was his fifth start of the tournament, while the ever-present Diaz was substituted at the interval of extra-time.

The win means Argentina retain their Copa America crown and have now won it for a record 16th time.

Heartbreak for Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez at Euro 2024

There was heartbreak for Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez with England as they were beaten 2-1 by Spain in the Euro 2024 final.

The Three Lions were consigned to being runners-up for the second successive edition of the tournament after Spain edged the decider in Berlin on Sunday night.

Nico Williams’ clinical strike two minutes into the second half put Spain ahead, though England levelled courtesy of a placed effort from substitute Cole Palmer.

But an 86th-minute finish from Mikel Oyarzabal settled the contest, in which Alexander-Arnold and Gomez were both unused substitutes.

Gakpo shares Euro 2024 top scorer award

Cody Gakpo is one of six players who have shared the top scorer prize at Euro 2024.

The Liverpool forward scored three times during the tournament for the Netherlands as they reached the semi-finals before a narrow defeat by eventual runners-up England.

Gakpo’s tally was matched by Harry Kane, Georges Mikautadze, Jamal Musiala, Dani Olmo and Ivan Schranz.

The Dutchman is the second Reds player to be a top scorer at the European Championship while with the club – Milan Baros previously did so with five goals for the Czech Republic at the 2004 edition.

Copa America: Nunez features as Uruguay finish third

Darwin Nunez featured in the first half as Uruguay took third place at the Copa America by defeating Canada on penalties overnight.

The Liverpool forward completed the opening 45 minutes in North Carolina, where the third-place play-off ended 2-2 after 90 minutes.

Rodrigo Bentancur and Ismael Kone traded goals early in the game, before Jonathan David put Canada ahead with 10 left to play.

Former Reds striker Luis Suarez equalised in added time, however, and Uruguay went on to win the penalty shootout 4-3.

They therefore finish third in the tournament, with Alexis Mac Allister’s Argentina set to face Luis Diaz’s Colombia in the final.

Thiago retires from football

Thiago Alcantara has retired from football after leaving Liverpool at the end of his contract.

The former Spain midfielder, 33, was restricted to just one appearance during the 2023-24 season because of injury.

"I will always be willing to give back what I have been given and I am grateful for the time, I have enjoyed it," he posted on social media.

"Thank you, football. And to all who accompanied me and made me a better player and person along the way."

Thiago had hip surgery towards the end of the 2022-23 season but was unable to return until February 2024, when he came on as a late substitute in a defeat at Arsenal and suffered another injury.

That was his 98th appearance for Liverpool after joining the club on a four-year deal from Bayern Munich in 2020.

Thiago won the FA Cup with Liverpool in 2021–22 and previously helped Bayern win the Bundesliga title in each of his seven seasons with the German club, as well as the Champions League in 2019–20.

He began his career with Barcelona, winning La Liga four times and the Champions League once, before joining Bayern in 2013.

Although born in Italy when his father - former Brazil winger Mazinho - was playing for Lecce, Thiago joined Barca at the age of 14 and went on to represent Spain on 46 occasions between 2011 and 2021.

Adrian to leave Liverpool after five years

Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian has chosen to leave the club after rejecting a contract offer from new manager Arne Slot.

The Spaniard's contract expired on June 30, but Liverpool offered him fresh terms as part of their 2023/24 retained list.

Fans were surprised at the news, given the 37-year-old hadn't played a competitive fixture since the 2022 Community Shield.

But reports claimed that Slot was considering promoting Adrian to become his number two goalkeeper in the event of Caoimhin Kelleher leaving the club.

However, it is now Adrian who has decided that his future lies away from Anfield, with the club confirming his departure.

In a club statement, Liverpool wrote: "Adrian departs Liverpool this summer having made a valuable contribution to the club's successes across his five years at Anfield.

"A popular figure among team-mates and staff alike, Adrian leaves the Reds with the best wishes of everybody at the club."

His destination has not been announced, but he is widely expected to join La Liga side Real Betis following the exit of former Manchester City goalkeeper Claudio Bravo.

In his own personal message to Liverpool supporters, posted to his Instagram account, Adrian said: "Thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything you have given me during this beautiful and successful journey together.

"In five years, you have shown me so many things.

"That wearing the Liverpool shirt, and defending the Liverpool badge at Anfield, should be added to the seven wonders of the world.

"That 11 yards is nothing when it comes to winning a title. That London is really Anfield South. That tradition is important, and should be protected.

"That You'll Never Walk Alone is not just an anthem, it's a philosophy of life.

"Now, it's time for me to share all of these experiences I have learned. I will be grateful to you for life."

Copa America: Darwin Nunez’s Uruguay reach semi-finals

Darwin Nunez’s Uruguay claimed a place in the Copa America semi-finals overnight.

Elsewhere in the quarter-finals, Nunez’s Uruguay met Alisson Becker’s Brazil in Las Vegas and both Reds started the contest, which ended 0-0.

Alisson made one excellent save during the subsequent penalty shootout but it was Uruguay who won out, 4-2, to advance.

Uruguay and Colombia will now face each other in the last four, with their meeting set for the early hours of Thursday morning.

Copa America: Luis Diaz scores as Colombia beat Panama

Luis Diaz scored a brilliant goal as his Colombia and Darwin Nunez’s Uruguay claimed a place in the Copa America semi-finals overnight.

Diaz started for Colombia in Arizona as they impressed with a 5-0 defeat of Panama and the Liverpool forward delivered his country’s third strike of the night shortly before half-time.

Racing in behind to collect a pass, the No.7 lifted a precise lob over the goalkeeper and into the net from the edge of the box.

Jhon Cordoba, James Rodriguez, Richard Rios and Miguel Borja were also on the scoresheet for Los Cafeteros, with Diaz withdrawn from proceedings in minute 65.

Trent Alexander-Arnold scores winning penalty for England

Trent Alexander-Arnold scored the winning spot-kick as England beat Switzerland on penalties to reach the semi-finals of Euro 2024.

Liverpool’s No.66 stepped off the bench in extra-time for his nation as the Three Lions progressed into the final four of the competition, with Reds teammate Joe Gomez an unused substitute in the tie.

In an even affair in Dusseldorf on Saturday, it was Switzerland who took the lead in the 75th minute via Breel Embolo’s finish inside the six-yard box.

England, however, levelled just five minutes later thanks to Bukayo Saka’s well-placed low strike from outside the area to send the game into extra-time.

With the two teams unable to be separated following the added half an hour, penalties were required, and it was Alexander-Arnold who converted the decisive effort from 12 yards to help his country to a 5-3 shootout victory.

Alexander-Arnold told BBC Sport post-match: “Incredible. They’re the goals and the aims that we set for ourselves. They’re a difficult opponent. Again, going behind, but the team has got a lot of character and a lot of belief and a lot of heart and spirit.

“We dug deep when it mattered most and [we] obviously get the win in the penalty shootout. We knew it was going to be tight. We knew we were never going to run away with the game, although that would’ve been nice. Whatever it takes, no matter what, we win and that’s all that matters to us.”

On his winning penalty, he added: “It’s what we practise. A lot of graft goes into that moment. They’re moments that I enjoy. When the gaffer says I’m taking one, the belly doesn’t drop.

“I enjoy it, I practise it. I knew what spot and I knew I just needed to execute it and I went and did that. All five penalties from us were great, Pickers with an amazing save to start the shootout gives you that confidence.

“We practise for these. You see every game so far has gone to extra-time in the quarter-finals. They’re tight margins, it was the finest of margins today, but we’ve been able to win.”

England will meet either Turkiye or the Netherlands in the semi-finals on Wednesday evening (8pm BST kick-off).

Copa America: Mac Allister assists as Argentina reach semis

Alexis Mac Allister provided an assist and later scored a shootout penalty as Argentina reached the Copa America semi-finals overnight.

The Liverpool midfielder was involved throughout his country’s last-eight meeting with Ecuador in Houston, Texas, which ended 1-1.

Lisandro Martinez had given Argentina a first-half lead as he converted at the back post when Mac Allister flicked on a corner delivery from the right flank.

But after Enner Valencia had sent a spot-kick against the woodwork for Ecuador, they equalised a minute into added time through Kevin Rodriguez.

Mac Allister was among the penalty takers during the shootout and coolly fired home from 12 yards as Argentina prevailed 4-2.

The reigning world champions will now face either Venezuela or Canada in the semi-finals, with that tie set to be played in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Copa America: Alisson and Diaz meet as Brazil also make the last eight

Alisson Becker's Brazil drew 1-1 with Colombia overnight to secure their spot in the quarter-finals of the 2024 Copa America.

Luis Diaz's nation had already qualified for the last eight heading into the encounter but the point clinched first place for them in Group D.

Both Liverpool players started the match in sweltering Santa Clara as Brazil struck first through Raphinha after 12 minutes.

Daniel Munoz then equalised for Colombia in first-half stoppage time, with Diaz withdrawn in minute 89.

Colombia will now meet Panama on Saturday night, while Brazil face Darwin Nunez and Uruguay in the early hours of Sunday.

Gakpo man of the match as Holland sweep aside Romania

Cody Gakpo scored his third goal of Euro 2024 and provided an assist to help the Netherlands advance to the quarter-finals with a 3-0 defeat of Romania.

The Liverpool forward opened the scoring 20 minutes into Tuesday’s last-16 clash in Munich, driving into the box from the left flank and firing a finish inside the near post.

That goal moved Gakpo up to joint-top scorer at the tournament so far, alongside Georges Mikautadze (Georgia), Jamal Musiala (Germany) and Ivan Schranz (Slovakia).

Gakpo played 84 minutes before being replaced, while Virgil van Dijk completed the whole game as Dutch captain and aided in securing a clean sheet.

Both almost delivered another goal in the second half, a Van Dijk header bouncing off the post and a Gakpo effort from close range ruled out for offside.

The Netherlands finally doubled their advantage seven minutes from the end, when Gakpo brilliantly kept the ball in play as he dribbled to the byline, cutting a pass back for Donyell Malen to convert.

And Malen then swept in his second of the tie in stoppage time for Ronald Koeman’s side, for whom Reds midfielder Ryan Gravenberch remained on the bench.

Next up for the Netherlands is a last-eight showdown with Turkiye at the Olympiastadion in Berlin, which will kick off at 8pm BST on Saturday (July 6).

“I think we played a good game and showed a great reaction from the last game [a 3-2 defeat by Austria in the group stage],” said Gakpo post-match.

“I am very pleased. Especially after the last game we needed a reaction and today was a good step in the right direction.

“We talked a lot about the aggression, the intensity and defending like a team. It was a good step and I am very happy we won.”

Copa America: Nunez helps Uruguay to maintain perfect record

Darwin Nunez was a starter for Uruguay in their 1-0 Copa America victory over the USA that secured top spot in Group C.

The forward played 89 minutes of the contest in Kansas City overnight as Mathias Olivera's second-half effort confirmed a first-placed finish for Marcelo Bielsa's side.

Uruguay progress to the quarter-finals with a 100 per cent record and will face the runners-up of Group D – which contains Alisson Becker's Brazil and Luis Diaz's Colombia – in the early hours on Sunday.

Jota and Portugal to meet Konate's France

Diogo Jota and Portugal earned a penalty shootout victory over Slovenia on Monday night to set up a meeting with Ibrahima Konate’s France in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024.

Jota was a 65th-minute substitute for his nation in Frankfurt as the last-16 clash ended goalless after 90 minutes.

In the extra-time that followed, Liverpool’s No.20 played a crucial role in earning his side a penalty, producing a driving run into the area before being brought down.

Cristiano Ronaldo, however, saw his spot-kick saved by goalkeeper Jan Oblak, which meant the tie required a penalty shootout after finishing 0-0.

Portugal went on to secure a 3-0 win on penalties, with Diogo Costa saving all three of Slovenia’s efforts to earn his country progression.

Earlier in the day, Konate was an unused substitute for France as they booked their spot in the last eight with a 1-0 victory over Belgium.

A Jan Vertonghen own goal five minutes from time settled the tie in Dusseldorf.

Portugal and France are now set to meet on Friday evening (8pm BST kick-off) for a place in the semi-finals.
